joe_b … funny you mention Billie Eilish, because I got serious Billie vibes from the song at the party. I was saving that comparison for that one. 😁

I also had a hard time hearing a lot of the lyrics to the songs. I just chalked it up to another crappy AMC presentation. I repeatedly complain about the auditorium they had it in because they don’t have it set up right for the screen size (about 1/3 of the screen is unused).

Variety just reported on exit polling for this movie. About a fourth of movie-goers didn't realize it was a musical and 16% left the theater disappointed. I've witnessed that kind of thing myself, with people walking out of the theater as far back as Sweeney Todd due to deceptive marketing. Tricking people who hate musicals into buying a ticket is underhanded on the studio's part, but Paramount probably made a bit more money with that approach this weekend.

Re: Mean Girls (2024) -- musical adaptation

Just got back from seeing this with my daughters. We all LOVED it!

But yeah, I heard someone behind me loudly ask "Is this a fucking Musical?" during the opening when Cady starts singing in Africa.

My girls and I were also wondering what happened to Cady's father too, was he completely absent from the stage musical too?

Yep. Typically the same actress plays Cady and Regina’s moms (as well as Ms. Norbury).

Re: Mean Girls (2024) -- musical adaptation

I figured I should support movie musicals, so I saw this on Saturday. I liked it, and the casting was great. I've seen Auli'i Cravalho (Moana) in the one-season dramatic series Rise with Josh Radnor, in which a high school produces Spring Awakening, so she sang plenty there. The pairing of Renee Rapp and Busy Phillipps was genius, and I liked the

cameo. However, I thought the songs were serviceable but not that memorable, and I had no hankering to listent to them afterwards. Funny thing is I searched Facebook to see if any of my friends had seen the movie, and it turns out I didn't remember that I saw the musical on tour back in 2021.

No one yelled at the screen when people started singing, but maybe by now everyone who's going to see it knows it's a musical. I guess others thought it was just a remake, which would seem a little early after 20 years but I guess it could happen.

Re: Mean Girls (2024) -- musical adaptation

This may only matter to me, but there's a brief line spoken by one of the people speaking into their cell phone cameras that is in the process of being removed from the digital versions out now and will probably be gone from the eventual disc. At about 1:02:30 "Megan Thee Stallion" says "We are back red, Y2K Firecrotch is back!" Lindsay Lohan took offense to the "Firecrotch" comment so it appears that some digital copies got out with the line intact but is cut from others, and the ones with it intact may be 'fixed'. I don't usually do this, but I've taken it upon myself to sail the high seas and save this for history's sake. I'm also a redhead and have been called that name long before Lindsay Lohan could probably speak, I always thought it was funny. Guess I should go buy "The Canyons" on Blu-Ray before Lindsay decides nobody should see that anymore also (I only have a few screen grabs from that, those who've seen it know what I'm talking about.)

Now Tina Fey should make a non-musical stage adaptation of this movie.

Re: Mean Girls (2024) -- musical adaptation

This was cute. It was almost shot for shot remake, except for the musical scenes. The girl who played Janice, if that was her voice, was kicking. She was good. The only change I saw was Damian was Black, instead of Latino, I think, in original. But, this new one was fun and I like songs that are catchy in these movies. It makes or breaks imo. The cameo was good, but damn she looks old. And, was it me or has Rapp gotten big? She’s in Sex Lives of College Girls, right? I know she’s tall, but she used to be smaller, didn’t she? Still looks good though.

Janice was played by Auli'i Cravalho, who was the voice of Moana. So it’s definitely her singing (everyone in the movie is singing in their voices).

I figured it was mostly their voices, but she really stood out. And, I love Moana.

She'll be Moana again in the live-action film opposite Dwayne Johnson apparently.

Re: Mean Girls (2024) -- musical adaptation

Really enjoyed this. Where the songs were a little lackluster (about half of them IMO) the excellent choreography helped pick up the slack. It was cast very well. Wish Hamm was used a little more but it was a small role in the original as well. Will pick this up at some point and although I won't watch it as much as I do the original could see going for it every third time I'm in the mood for Mean Girls.
