Re: Vote for your favorite Best Picture nominee. (2020 Oscars)

I have not seen the Joker so it could change

I want the Irishman to win it all since this might be the last chance for De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci to win Oscars and it could be like a lifetime achievement award though it might not be their best work but good enough.

Marriage Story was good but not best picture worthy though the performances are Oscar caliber.

Do people think this? I mean outside of critics? Because I thought the performances (other than Driver, who was solid...and some of the supporting cast, like Alan Alda) were rather "showy" - particularly Scarlett's. But regardless, I agree it's not Best Picture-worthy, for the simple fact that it's pretty unoriginal and doesn't cover anything we haven't seen in a hundred other films about broken marriages.

You haven't seen it yet? You posted that you've bought both the blu and the digital.

1917 for me - that film is a master class on screen. Nothing else comes close.

I guess it's just me. I wouldn't buy multiple media types of a movie I haven't seen.

But my favorite movie of 2019 (that I've seen) is, for now, Uncut Gems.
Changing my vote to Parasite from the group of BP nominees, but Uncut Gems is still my favorite.

I think he's questioning the fact that you hadn't seen it before purchasing it, not that you hadn't seen it since purchasing it.

that's what a blind buy is. i don't think he was questioning that. he was questioning 2 different purchases or assuming i made 2 different purchases. i don't care. whatever. i wanted to see this, i have no doubt i will love it as it is my type of movie so a blind buy, if you call it that with reviews i've heard, read, even though i have no idea what it's about. loved The Host. Liked Snowpiercer and this is just a winner. it was a no brainer for me.

He thought oldboy bought both the digital copy and the Blu-ray. Not the case, the Blu-ray just comes with a free early download code for the digital copy. Or something.

Re: Vote for your favorite Best Picture nominee. (2020 Oscars)

finally watched enough of the nominees to vote. Still need to watch Ford Vs Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit and Little Women. But after once Upon a Time, Parasite and 1917 I doubt they will be better, specially the last two.
My vote went to 1917 but Parasite was a close second.

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" gets my vote.

"1917" is runner-up and "Ford v Ferrari" would be third place of the nominees.

Haven't seen Jojo, but I'm going OUaTiH #1 and Parasite a veryclose #2. Kind of a big drop after that but I also admired Marriage Story, Little Women and 1917. And while Ford vs Ferrari wasn't that great a movie, I sure enjoyed watching it.

This has to be the best year for film in a long ass time. Legit 3-4 contenders where any of them winning would be fine.

JoJo would probably be your #3 but I also think 1917 should be higher on your list.

I seriously doubt it's as close as everyone would like to think it is. I'm pretty sure at this point 1917 is a lock for Best Picture and Parasite is a lock for Best International Film. Let's face it, if Roma didn't have enough steam to win Best Picture last year, Parasite isn't going to be able to do it.

I've seen Parasite three times in the theater but I only watched Roma once at home on Netflix. Quite different movies and a different movie-going experience. I don't think it'll take BP but I think it has a better chance.

Re: Vote for your favorite Best Picture nominee. (2020 Oscars)

Finally caught up with Jojo and Little Women. Once Upon A Time is still my pick. I'd probably rank them as such:

1. Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood
2. Parasite
3. 1917
4. Marriage Story
5. Irishman
6. Ford v Ferrari
7. Little Women
8. Joker
9. Jojo Rabbit

1 & 2 are far above the others. I thought 3-7 we're all very good. And 8-9 were enjoyable but problematic for me. I didn't dislike any of them. 1917 was the hardest for me to rank because I think the theatrical experience far outpaced the actual film. As it is, I ranked it on the basis of how I felt in the moment, but time, and an inability to rewatch in Dolby Ciinema will ultimately send it further down the list.

Gotta be 1917 for Oscar, right?

I just voted for Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood.

It wasn’t an easy choice because I enjoyed 1917, Parasite and the Irishman almost equally.
