Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022, D: Johnson) - S: Daniel Craig
As Knives Out concludes yet another strong weekend at the box office, writer-director Rian Johnson is already working on a follow-up to his hit original whodunit, lining up a potential franchise for Lionsgate.
Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter at Lionsgate's pre-Golden Globes party on Saturday night that he was already developing a sequel centered on Craig's Southern detective Benoit Blanc investigating a new case. He added that he was eager to make the film quickly, ideally in the next year.
Johnson's producing partner Ram Bergman added that Craig was eager to reprise the role. "Daniel had so much fun doing it, and he wants to do more," he said.
Lionsgate and MRC's Knives Out, made for a reported $40 million and boasting a star-studded cast including Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer and Toni Collette, became a shining beacon for original films in a 2019 box office dominated by sequels and franchises. It is up for three Golden Globe awards on Sunday - best comedy/musical picture and best comedy/musical actor and actress for Craig and co-star Ana de Armas. (MRC shares a parent company, Valence Media, with The Hollywood Reporter.)
Lionsgate has not officially greenlit a Knives Out sequel, but given the film's $247 million haul worldwide, the film could be the beginning of a lucrative franchise for the studio and for Craig as he wraps up his stint as James Bond in the upcoming No Time to Die. Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told THR at Saturday's party that he's eager to read a script.

I dunno, Johnson is already 0-1 with sequels to movies that Daniel Craig has appeared in.

I mean it’s not like a standard comedy where for example Ghostbusters could never be as funny and original the second time in New York fighting ghosts. Here this is a mystery detective story and just like Poirot and Holmes can have many interesting stories to tell, so could this character.

If they can get the release schedule so there's a film with Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc the opposite year of Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot for the next ten years, I'd be very happy.

Son of Kong arriving nine months after King Kong was pretty impressive as well.

...and #3 apparently. Netflix apparently paying north of $400m for the duo.

So how does that work? They pay $400M and Johnson pays for the cost of the two movies?
In any case I am stoked. Loved the first one and will have Netflix forever so it won't cost me any more. Bummed I won't get another Steel book to match my awesome Best Buy one though.

I think the deal itself is worth 450 million, but I assume that's with budgets, production costs, and salaries. The article could have been clearer, but works for me. Loved the first film.

I like the idea of Craig returning as the same character in a brand new whodunit adventure. I’m down for more!
I liked the first one but the plot point of the entire mystery being resolved with a character that is unable to tell a lie without immediately vomiting is incredibly terrible hack writing that takes a great movie and knocks it down several notches for me. Sorry but that type of ridiculous writing doesn’t belong in a crappy TV sitcom, much less a star studded Oscar worthy movie.

How the hell is Netflix not bankrupt? The Internet says they have $16 billion in short-term and $5 billion in long-term debt. And here they are spending another half billion.

The $16b is since 2011, it stands to reason a good chunk has been paid back, or they have some sort of deal on its maturity.
