Earwig and the Witch (2020) -- Studio Ghibli
This is exciting news for fans of this Anime Studio and one of the movies, will be from retired Hayao Miyazaki. I'm looking forward to it.
[Studio Ghibli Confirms It Is Working on Two New Films in 2020 Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film post-retirement is one of the two projects. Adele Ankers By Adele Ankers Studio Ghibli has confirmed that it is working on two new films in 2020, one of which will be Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film since coming out of retirement. Per i-D, the iconic Japanese animation studio revealed its prospective plans as part of their annual New Year's message, in which it detailed the news of a second project alongside the Miyazaki-directed feature film Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (How Do You Live?). Miyazaki's coming-of-age fantasy adventure was previously pencilled in for a release date before the Summer 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. However, Cartoon Brew reported that producer Toshio Suzuki's most recent projections suggest the film is more likely to be released between 2021 and 2022. Studio Ghibli's message did not provide any further details of release windows for this film or the second mystery title in the pipeline, though it did recap some earlier announcements, including the studio's upcoming theme park and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind kabuki stage play. This news comes shortly after HBO Max acquired U.S. streaming rights to Studio Ghibli films, meaning that Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, and many more will be available on WarnerMedia's new streaming service when it launches in Spring 2020. Great news! I've been meaning to do a Ghibli marathon...still a fair amount I haven't seen yet. Good news about them coming to streaming as well, they were just made available digitally a few wks ago.

I'm pretty sure Miyazaki plans to keep working until he's dead. If you've watched the documentaries about him in recent years, he doesn't look like a man that can retire peacefully.

Some might be put off by the ending. The use of CGI is strange to see from a Ghibli flick.

33% at Rotten Tomatoes so far. Most saying it’s not just bad by Ghibli standards, but by any standards. Which is disappointing since so far even the lesser Ghibli films have been worth watching. I’m curious to hear more viewer responses.

If you have HBO Max, check it out but keep expectations low. Don't expect a usual SG movie. HBO Max has a hub just for about 20 other SG movies.

Probably the worst anime film by Ghibli yet...
felt like it should've been a 15 minute episode of a series rather than stretched to a movie length that doesn't even feel like the whole story. animation was pretty awkward at times and had none of that Ghibli-flair people love of the studio. |

This is one of those movies I wouldn't call a movie because there is no middle or end. The entire movie could have been squeeze into 15 minutes and been the intro to a real movie. There is no story arc. Its a big nothing of a movie.

Apparently this was a made-for-tv movie in Japan and not a theatrical release, so that does give it more leeway in my mind as I was watching it.
I mean, there are other Ghibli movies that meander around and don't answer questions, and this one actually fleshed out the source material more, which to me means that the source material probably wasn't a very good inspiration for adaptation. The book was written by the same author as Howl's Moving Castle, but at least that one only adapted one book in a trilogy, I have no idea why Earwig opens up all these mystery boxes and then never bothers to even address them. I also think the direction and overall charm of the hand drawn animation is really missing here. Several scenes, I found myself thinking "if this were hand drawn standard Ghibli, I'd like it a ton more." And then you get to that ending montage of drawings and I loved that way more than the style of the actual movie. I understand this was a budget release and that this is Ghibli's first movie with this kind of animation (and honestly it's better than Ronja). But man talk about a miss in style. Then you have the dubbing. The actual dub wasn't terrible, but this is the first time in decades where the mouth movements not matching the words really really bothered me. |

It felt like a very Ghibli moment early on when the Mandrake, the witch, and Earwig were walking down the street to her new home. Quirky characters doing something normal, and heading into a new adventure with no idea what’s coming.
The rest of the film was just meh. Some Ghibli mannerisms, I liked the song, and... there was a talking cat. :shrug:
