Probably a favor to Mulligan. They were in An Education together.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

Had a few movie vouchers with an expiration date at the end of this month, so checked this out last night along with Freaky. There were a handful of people present for both showings, obviously spread out in the theater with every other row blocked off. I was reminded how much I've missed being in the theater.

As for this film, it was certainly entertaining. I was captivated from start to finish and couldn't have predicted the ending. Well worth the watch.

He paid a bunch to watch Shadow in the Cloud, he did not like Shadow in the Cloud. He did not like Shadow in the Cloud, with a passion.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

Fairly good revenger. I thought it was a logical conclusion that Cassie,
Spoiler:
as an "avenging angel", died at the end. I did find it satisfying that she made sure the rapist and his enablers would pay some sort of price - professional, if nothing else - after all, though I do agree with RichC2 that the guy would probably get off lightly from a judicial perspective. In fairness, the guy who smothered her, as abhorrent as was his act of seven years earlier, was arguably defending himself when he killed her. He was still handcuffed to the bed with one arm. Who knows what she would have done? The sad thing is, his rape would probably have been beyond the statute of limitations (six years for rape in the States?), had he been charged, which is questionable given the death (suicide?) of the victim. Also sad, and outrageous, is that only a fraction of rapist motherfuckers in real life are ever caught or charged. I wish the movie were better, but it was adequate escapism.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

Spoiler:
^ Better? You’re rationalizing crimes in real life and the real life implications. That’s not what the movie is about. It’s about ultimate revenge and the notion of the consequences that follow without thinking about what would “really” happen. Fuck real life, this was fiction and done so well. And Cassie just paid the ultimate price for the fictional crimes. But revenge was the ultimate goal and succeeded in spades. You said escapism and that’s what it is meant to be. Fictional escapism at a great, believable level, so why do you have to rationalize it in real life terms?

^ May want to spoiler some of that Oldboy, this actually isn't a review thread. Some folks may still be skimming for general consensus.

It’s not even 2 pages and we are talking about the actual seeing of the movie, so perhaps it just should be at this point.

Yes, I had some fondness for it, but didn't think it was all that great. As for believability, there are some problems. I'm happy for you that you loved it. Congrats! I'll be sure to run my opinions past you next time before expressing them?

Fun little revenge thriller, the gf and I both liked it. I had flashbacks of Hard Candy watching this

Just watched this tonight and I really enjoyed it. Thought it was really well done. I even liked the ending.
Carey Mulligan's been turning in great performances for a while now and this was no exception.

I laugh at the reviews of regular Joe Schmoe's before they've even watched the film claiming "great, another anti-men film".

The noms plus this reduced price point should give it a nice boost.

Fantastic movie. Loved it from start to finish. Now this one I would not have been pissed about spending more for renting. But I Redboxed it.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

I just rented this from Red Box and loved it. Such a dark and twisted movie. Carey Mulligan was excellent playing the lead/Anti hero. I loved how things wrapped up at the end. It was the ultimate middle finger to those people who thought they could get away with what they did.

A good supporting cast too for this small film. Normally a small film like this is not on my radar, but I’m glad I checked it out.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

I rented it this week and thought it was good, but honestly don't understand all the Oscar nods. I guess I just don't think it's THAT good. Or maybe I've just seen too many movies like this one and don't feel it's all that original. But I won't say I wasn't entertained, I just think in any other year (meaning if many movie releases scheduled for 2020 hadn't been bumped), it probably wouldn't have all the awards noms/wins that it's getting.

I don’t agree with that at all. It most certainly would have.

People keeping acting like a bunch of Oscar type movies have been held back and that hasn’t really been the case. It is the big studio blockbuster that have been held.

Plenty of great movies have been released over the last year. Just because they didn’t premiere in theatres (not the case with this one) doesn’t mean they aren’t worth the time.

This film absolutely would have received multiple Oscars nominations in any other year. Especially Best Actress and Screenplay.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

Well, it was originally supposed to be an April release so if last year had been a typical movie year it might have gotten hurt by being a spring release. It's most competitive category is probably Best Actress and Mulligan is good enough that she probably would have gotten a nomination even with the early release. Now with the December release in this unusual year she's a front runner and deservedly so.

Re: Promising Young Woman (2020, W/D: Fennell) S: Carey Mulligan

I'm fine with Mulligan's nod. But Best Picture? How is this movie any different from a dozen other "revenge" movies we've seen in the past? Is it better than Kill Bill? (No.) Elle? (No.) The Brave One? (yes, but not by a wide margin). There's a LOT of movies as good as this one. It just hit at the right time (the whole #MeToo movement) to get a lot of attention. The only huge difference here is the dark comedy angle...but that actually makes it have less impact for me, not more.
