Joker: Folie à Deux (2024, D: Phillips) S: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

On Oct. 7, Joker director Todd Phillips headed into Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich's office, buoyed by the film's $96.2 million opening-weekend haul. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter he proposed an outsized idea — the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters' origin stories.

Emmerich balked. After all, Warner Bros. is very protective of the DC canon. And all other DC deals have been for one film, and one film only. But Phillips did emerge from the meeting with the rights to at least one other DC story, sources say. And now that Joker has crossed the $1 billion mark, a sequel is on the way. As the movie keeps raking in money overseas, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker outing (he and Scott Silver, who penned the gritty Joker screenplay, will write the follow-up), THR has learned.

Warners has sequel options in place for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who has emerged as a strong contender in the Oscar best actor race. The studio and Phillips' reps at CAA declined to comment.

Joker marks the fourth DC title to cross $1 billion, following in the footsteps of 2018's Aquaman ($1.15 billion), 2012's The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and 2008's The Dark Knight ($1 billion). But its $60 million budget is far less than those previous films, so it is almost assured of generating profits of more than $500 million (Warners has a 50 percent stake, while Village Roadshow and Bron Studios each have 25 percent).

The unexpected bounty also is generating a huge payday for Phillips, 48. Sources say the director will earn close to $100 million when the dust has settled (he deferred his upfront salary in exchange for a bigger slice of the adjusted gross). In fact, the deal is similar to one he struck with Warners before the first Hangover movie, which went on to earn a surprise $467.5 million worldwide in 2009 off a $35 million budget (the trilogy took in $1.42 billion).

With Joker, Phillips already toyed with the idea of Bruce Wayne's origins (a letter written by the mother of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, implies that the two are half-brothers. But Penny Fleck might not have been telling the truth, given the Fleck family propensity to imagine things that haven't taken place).

Still, he won't be exploring Batman's backstory. That task is already in the hands of writer-director Matt Reeves, whose The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, is coming to theaters June 25, 2021. Ditto Wonder Woman, whose adolescence on the hidden island of Themyscira was laid out by screenwriter Allan Heinberg in Patty Jenkins' 2017 film that grossed $821 million. (The sequel starring Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman 1984, is due out June 5, 2020.)

As for a DC villain origin story that could be mined next, Phillips would be well suited for either Darkseid, a tyrannical ruler who is worshipped by some as the god of evil, or Metropolis' power-mad one-percenter, Lex Luthor.

It's a little surprising to me that Phoenix apparently signed for sequel options. I know that he circled Dr. Strange for some time and ultimately balked at the sequel options there, though the commitment Marvel was asking him to sign up for was likely a lot bigger than whatever he signed with DC.

An option is a type of contract.

Yes it does mention it

Options in place means that it's in his contract.

I don’t think I’m going to find the Joker as an emotionally volatile boxer to be very believable, but there’s only so many Scorsese movies left to rip off.

The most amazing thing in that article is Todd Phillips getting $100M for making Joker. That is just insane money. I hope Scorsese gets his 10%.

Maybe Arthur takes a job working for a low-level mob boss in NY and works his way up the ranks?

They need to do what the CW shows did and stamp an Elseworlds seal on these.

Yep:

Sorry, ‘Joker’ Fans: No Sequel Talks Yet or Deal With Director Todd Phillips

Following a report Wednesday that a sequel to the supervillain blockbuster “Joker” was in the works, no deal is in place and that no discussions are ongoing between director Todd Phillips nor screenwriter Scott Silver, two individuals with knowledge told TheWrap.

Phillips was reported to have met with Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich, but one source says that no meeting took place and that Phillips did not pitch plans for other DC villain origin stories. Another individual says that any talks are preliminary at best.

I feel like a one off film for this version of The Joker is best. Kind of hope there’s not a sequel, but I’m sure WB is chomping at the bit to do one with the money they’ve made. Just not sure a second film would be as good.

Truth be told I think Arthur’s descent into madness and turning into The Joker was a bit more interesting than when he actually donned the makeup and whatnot. I also don’t know how much more can be done with the character without introducing someone to put him against. At the same time though I don’t know how he’d really fare against Batman.

Even if everything was set for a sequel, I would keep it quiet until after the Oscars. Phoenix has a better chance of winning if people believe it's a one-off performance.

This. As soon as I read the news this morning (now supposedly not accurate), the first thing I thought it that Phoenix's chances on winning just dropped a bit. I think someone at the studio was told to STFU and then the PR machine went into motion at Warners.

I just watched The Joker last night for the second time. I wanted some time between viewings to digest. Two months later, you can feel a lot of the inner turmoil that Arthur was feeling. Joaquin was spot on and definitely worth of a nomination. I do want to see a follow up as there is so much more to say. I would like to see the storyline of how far society will embrace his vigilante justice.

I loved the first film, but I think it should be left as a standalone.

re: Joker: Folie à Deux (2024, D: Phillips) S: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

I think a sequel would be better without Phoenix or if he’s involved don’t have him be the Arthur Fleck Joker. Make Joker films that are anthology type, and that are unrelated to each other.

Go about it in the way that the comics have where The Joker is so messed up that even he doesn’t know what causes him to be the way he is.

You could do another that would be a loose adaptation of The Man Who Laughs, and go through with him as the Red Hood and whatnot. I think doing that would be more interesting than just a straight up sequel to the 2019 film.

i do too, but Phoenix doesn’t get or go after BIG paydays, and I would think he would get maybe 20 million to do this.

Can’t blame the guy, as long as he keeps making interesting films and doesn’t go full blown Robert Downey Jr on us.

I feel like a second diminishes what a strange phenomena the first movie was. Already, I'm thinking about forgotten sequels to classic films, like Funny Lady or Butch And Sundance The Early Years.

Since the first one is equal parts Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy maybe this one will be an amalgam of New York, New York, and After Hours.

The Joker gets lost downtown, ends up in a club and falls in love with the singer working there.
