Well I'm guessing it's going to be one of the most twisted and deranged musicals ever to be produced. Most people will hate it but I know I'll probably be one of the weirdos who likes it. Remember the establishment mainstream media made up a fake controversy saying Joker was dangerous and made for Incels.

I don't remember anyone saying the first film was dangerous.

And I loved that trailer. The umbrella overhead shot was amazing, as was that final smile.

Oh there was tons of talk of mass shootings being likely opening weekend.

Phoenix's commitment to get his body like that is impressive. It's one thing to pound protein and carbs and work with a trainer to get buff... it's something entirely different to look emaciated and starve yourself for weeks / months.

The last scene of the lipstick morphing from on the window to on his face was impressive.

As an Elseworld's story about a deranged, unstable man that calls himself 'Joker', it looks... interesting. Will probably check it out when it hits Max like I did with the first film.

It may be impressive, but it is probably stupid. He will likely have all kinds of possible health problems derive from it eventually. I know Tom Hanks said he had a lot of issues doing it from Castaway. I think the body rebounds better when actors do that stuff at a young age but Phoenix is 50 now. It is a lot to put your body through. Especially more than once.

And yeah, I remember a ton of talk about the first Joker movie invoking the incels and possible violence. Surprised we haven't started hearing it again yet. Probably will happen more toward release date.

Here is the Controversary of Joker explained. This was completely made up and I'll bet the media makes up something similar for clicks this fall. I guess no one was smart enough to see the influence of the movie came from Taxi Driver.

Re: Joker: Folie Deux (2024, D: Phillips) S: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

Considering I thought the first movie is the one of the most overrated films of the last five years, I have zero expectations for this. I love musicals, but I'll have to wait for reviews on this one. I like Gaga but this version of the Joker does nothing for me.

Might be worth using my monthly pass for the theater but I'll probably just wait for streaming. I wish I'd done that for the first one.

I liked but did not love the first Joker, (I found it somewhat derivative), and I am not a big fan of musicals, (I still have not see La La Land), so I am not sure about this. Willing to keep my mind open.

They did. I still remember there being armed security guards at my AMC when we saw it opening weekend.

Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. At least it did get more folks out there to discover more of the Scorsese library.

I think what I liked most about this trailer is that it doesnt look like its a ripoff of Taxi Driver or King of Comedy. Im hoping this sequel takes its own way and doesnt rely so much on Scorsese homages.

I will be first to admit I crapped all over the idea of it being a musical, but when I saw the trailer, it totally blew me away. This went from you couldn't pay me to watch this to it's one my must-see films of the year.

Here's how I reacted to the initial rumor (in a since-deleted Tweet) that the sequel would be a musical co-starring Lady Gaga:

Re: Joker: Folie Deux (2024, D: Phillips) S: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

I lost interest in this when I heard it was going to be a musical but that trailer was awesome. I love how we will probably clue din more on what is actually occurring as opposed to what's going in the Joker's head (Teh umbrella scene as an example, they're not colorful at all in the real world...see the shot seconds before the overhead shot - yeah, I know this is obvious but I'm just making a point).

Phillips has created his own little world here.

I love the concept of the music as therapy as well. Could make for some nice setups.

I have a feeling this will be much bigger than the first as well.

I have not seen the 1st Joker since I saw it once in the theater back in 2019. Didn't buy the disc or digital copy or stream it on Max. It's one of those rare movies for me that I enjoyed, but is a 1-time only watch.

This looks good and it's likely going to be the same for me. Once will probably be enough.

Re: Joker: Folie Deux (2024, D: Phillips) S: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga

I've long been curious why so many people responded negatively to the original Joker (whether because of the director's credentials, or the above-mentioned social-media crap, or whatever). I found it to be a fascinating interpretation of the character through the lens of real-world mental illness. On top of that, it's gorgeously and meticulously designed and filmed, incredibly well acted, and it has this slow-burn energy that feels really weighty. The homages to Scorsese's New York City feel perfect to me, as a film lover. I never saw them as derivative at all. Many films use homage like this, and it especially makes sense with a character who lives inside his own head. Joker was one of my favorites of that year, and this new one looks like an equally mesmerizing take. I'm jazzed about it.

I don't care about the Joker as a character beyond how he relates to Batman. I don't care about his motivations, his family life, his relationships, how society beat him up or mistreated him, etc. To me, it all becomes an attempt to justify why he ended up the way he did.

Part of the appeal of that character is that he is a mystery - that's why Nolan's version with Ledger is the gold standard. I think he should be a force of nature, not someone with a shitty home life and a shitty love life who turned into a shitty person.

So, and I ask this with all due respect . . . should this be a considered a criticism of the film, or an explanation of the preconceived notions you personally brought to it? Isn't an interpretation OK to explore?
