Carrying over my review from the other thread when I saw it last month...
This may be Scorsese's magnum opus... his Once Upon a Time... As it has been said, it is not like Goodfellas or Casino. To me, TWoWS was the end of that trilogy. This is more in line with themes of Mean Streets. If this was the last movie he ever made, then it would be an accomplishment to go out on (luckily he's got more in him).
There is A LOT of movie here, but it is never boring. Thelma's editing keeps at a nice pace.
Pacino is the scene stealer of the movie. He's got so many great scenes. Some hilarious stuff too. He's got to get a nomination. It's the best work he's done in years. Same with De Niro.
I love that Scorsese is pulling actors from all of his work. You got guys from his movies, Vinyl, Boardwalk Empire, etc. It was so great seeing Pesci on screen again. I wish Frank Vincent was still alive to join in.
The de-aging tech is not terrible. The first time they use it, it was very apparent, and that scene was a little rough. It is mostly De Niro where it sometimes looks weird. It was because they changed his eyes to blue. There is another actor (Boardwalk Empire alum) who had his eyes changed for an iconic historical figure too and that looked weird as well. Pesci, I was amazed with. And Pacino, I know they used it on, but if you didn't know it was used, you wouldn't be able to tell.
I'm excited to watch this again at home in November.
Oh... and for those of us who loved the original name of the movie, the title card played twice is I Heard You Paint House. The Irishman isn't shown until the end. I guess they compromised?
Five stars.

Is anyone in NY going to see this in that Broadway theater? That seems like a pretty cool venue for this.

Re: The Irishman (2019, D: Scorsese) S: De Niro, Pacino, Pesci -- Netflix
Just got back from seeing this on broadway . Really good, but it was a it too long. Very methodical pace for a Scorsese film. That being said, Pacino was great, and the de-aging effects outside of Deniro seem almost flawless

I'm sure opinions will vary. But for me, this is Scorsese's best since Goodfellas. Pacino and De Niro were great, but Pesci was fucking amazing. It's criminal that he has (mostly) denied the world of his gifts for the past 20 years. But if this is his last appearence on the silver screen, It is his masterpiece. If anyone gets an acting nod out of this I hope its him. Although all 3 are deserving. 3.5 hours is a long runtime, but I was engaged for every second of those 3.5 hours. I'm sure Scorsese will be nominated, but I think the fact that its Netflix will put the kibosh on his chances of winning. Probably the same for any acting nom's too.

This was fucking great and completes the trilogy of Goodfellas, Casino, and The Irishman. I'm glad they kept the original code of "I Heard You Paint Houses."
Since this is also the spoiler thread -- Hoffa's death was even framed like Joe Pesci's death in Goodfellas, too. Everyone was great but if I was voting for who gets a Best Oscar it's gotta be Pacino.

Great film. The deaging was fine. De Niro’s eyes were a strange shade of blue. I’m not sure what the motivating factor was there, to make him look younger?

Starting my 2nd viewing... really enjoyed it. Just the collective achievement of bringing this to the screen (even though for most it's the small screen) is remarkable. Everyone's in their mid 70's... talk about showing em how it's done! Of course it's a slower film... but I didn't mind it at all. (no doubt being at home helps) All of the legends brought their A game... I think Pacino really injected a lot of energy, he played a larger role than I expected. Man, this has to be a who's who of Scorsese actors in there - I recognized Ms. Hoffa as Lois from Goodfellas right away. I don't know where this falls in his filmography...a best pic nod would be earned...but again, I think I'm just most impressed by the ensemble and film as a whole.

An excellent film if not as epic as some others see it. Acting is terrific and all 3 of the leads are award worthy. Pesci and Pacino seem to be getting the most props, but DeNiro was terrific. I especially like how he used little stutters when he was fearful especially when he was recounting his time in the war. Some things were maybe a little too on the nose like when Pesci and DeNiro are talking in Italian and the music is very very similar to the famous score from the Godfather. The overriding theme really didn't need a 3.5 hour platform, but I am not sure I would take many scenes out either.,
The de-aging process works well but the issue I see with it are noses. The faces are deaged and they look like they are in their 40s or 50s but they have 70 year old noses. And ears. They need to fix that to get it better. Like all effect the technology will improve and in 5-10 years the process will be 2 or 3 times as good and 1/10 of the cost, so I suspect we will see it more and more.
Not sure I would watch it again, but definitely a movie to see.

Watched this tonight. I was originally planning on splitting it up into two nights but ended up watching the whole thing in one sitting.
It felt like the culmination of several legendary careers. If Scorsese, DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino, and Keitel all retired tomorrow Id be happy this was their last film. I wish Keitel would have been in it more but thats a small complaint.
Im hoping against hope that Pesci receives an Oscar nod. His subtle performance was brilliant.

I was really tired when I sat down to watch it, but I didn't want to wait until Sunday (my next chance to watch it), so I put it on and figured I'd watch half tonight, half tomorrow night. And I couldn't stop. After about an hour and fifteen minutes I knew I was in for the long haul, and I actually perked up and didn't feel the least bit sleepy. (Now, after having just finished it, I'm exhausted and ready for bed - but during the movie I was wide awake and totally captivated by what I was watching.)
Pesci looks like he's 86, not 76, and even when they de-aged him he still looked way older than the last movie I saw him in. That was jarring at first, but his performance was outstanding, and the age gave his performance even more gravitas.
But what an amazing cast, and what great performances! As has been stated, it would have been nice to get more Harvey Keitel, but it was great to see him in the movie, regardless.
This really is Scorsese's magnum opus. Is it as good as Goodfellas? Or Casino? Yes and no. It's not as wildly entertaining, but it's also got a little more substance. So it's not as good, but better, if that makes any sense. It's definitely better than The Departed, which is a very good movie.
I really hope that it does get a Blu Ray release next year, but I'm not going to hold my breath. It's just a movie that I would love to be able to have something tangible and (almost) permanent. I'm sure that a release on DVD/Blu would depend on the deal Scorsese struck with Netflix. Either way, I'm definitely going to make this a movie I watch every year or two, just like Goodfellas and Casino.
I have rarely voted a movie 5 stars here, but this one definitely gets that rating from me. Excellent.

I assume it was because Frank Sheeran's eyes are that shade of blue, while De Niro's eyes are brown. De Niro also wore 7 inch lifts in his shoes as Sheeran was 6'4 and De Niro is 5'9.

Just finished it. Loved it overall. Great to see these three guys bring it like they used to. I watched it in 3 chunks, and I didnt think it was too much movie, as it was entertaining throughout.
As for the aging tech, overall I thought it was pretty good. It wasnt the faces that broke the illusion though, it was their bodies. They could de-age the way Deniro looks, but they couldnt de-age how stiffly he moves and that is what broke those younger scenes for me. Especially the scene where he beats up the shopkeeper for pushing his daughter. Just looked weird.
This had potential to be a disaster and took some very big risks. So glad that this was a success.
