Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

From the top 9 (according to Rotten Tomatoes) horror films from the year 2000 to the present, which is your favorite?

Or select "Other" and tell us your answer!

Of the ones listed, I'd go with It Follows. Interesting premise, stylish direction and tone, and originality in a genre known for being incredibly derivative.

The Cabin In The Woods is great but it's really more of a film deconstructing horror tropes - I was never scared watching it. Surprised none of the Conjuring movies made it on the list.

I would go with Session 9.

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003). It's not even close.

Of the ones listed, The Babadook. It actually scared me while watching it, which is very rare. I still get creeped out or startled plenty while watching horror films, but that Babadook guy did a number on me. A great psychological piece of filmmaking.

I wanted to go with It Follows. The first time I watched I thought it was the best horror movie I had ever seen. However, after watching it recently. The third act sort or goes downhill. Still a great movie but, not as good as I once thought.

My favorite is The Descent.

A lot of decent choices, but even not limiting to horror, Get Out is perhaps the greatest film of this century.

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

Pan's Labyrinth is the best film of all those listed, followed by Get Out.

However, it's really not a horror film is it? Or is it? It is? Or is? It or? Bernard?

I went with Babadook.
IMO, it's damn near perfect.

Trick 'r Treat

I like Sinister, Conjuring, Insidious, Dead Silence, etc.
Clearly I have a problem with choosing just one.

I voted for "Get Out," although I don't really consider it "horror" - then again, a number of movies on this list fit that category...more "thriller" than "horror."

Hokeyboy 10-29-19 08:19 AM

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

If you get right down to it, Mulholland Dr. was more terrifying than anything listed in the poll.

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

I voted for Cabin In The Woods, though it was a toss up between that and Get Out. Both were great but I admit that neither really scared me, in fact, both had many laugh out loud moments.

As far as being actually scared, The Witch takes the cake for me.

I'm surprised Us didn't make the list. That also scared the hell out of me.

That's a great choice. Fun horror movie.

I picked The Witch, but my other favorite is The Devils Backbone. I've seen every movie on the list, which is weird because I don't watch that many movies.

Love The Devil's Backbone.

I'm not a big horror guy and I've only seen three in the poll (Quiet Place, It Follows and Cabin in the Woods) but I thought It Follows was brilliant. Not your typical horror flick.

TheMovieman 10-29-19 07:26 PM

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

Not sure which one I would pick (I will say Trick r Treat is a good choice), I do know which I wouldn't: The Witch. I found more on the funny side than anything remotely scary or unnerving.

For me, Cabin in the Woods was an excellent comedy; but I wouldn't call it a horror film tbh.

If I had to pick one of the poll options, without picking "other", I'd have to go with A Quiet Place. Looking forward to the sequel.

If I went with other, I'd say The Descent.

There's just something about being trapped in the dark an underground cave with seemingly no way out.

Seeing it in the theater really enhanced that feeling.

I voted Alien while it consider to be sci-fi film, I pretty much jump off my seat seeing it first time. Yeah, even that stupid cat made me jump on one scene.

It’s also 20+ years before the 21st century.

A Tale of Two Sisters and Pulse (the original Japanese film, obviously) are good choices. I would have to give serious consideration to I Saw The Devil as well.

I voted Pan's Labyrinth (even though I would consider it more of an adult fairytale). If I had to toss on an other I would vote The Strangers

Pan’s Labyrinth by country mile. That movie is sublime. Horror? Eh, not sure about that, but if those are choices, then no hesitation...

You voted other for a movie a century ago? ;)

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

I was torn between Let The Right One In vs Pan’s Labyrinth. I went with the former only because PL could be just as easily be called dark fantasy as horror. The real horror is more in the subtext of what creates the fantasy.

OldBoy 10-31-19 05:28 PM

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

i would also say The Descent and Let the Right One In, as well was, High Tension and Martyrs. Loved those. But, PL for the win.

This is the correct answer!

And Pan's Labyrinth is not a horror movie. Pretty poor poll choices made by someone who doesn't watch many horror movies, obviously.

OldBoy 10-31-19 06:28 PM

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

What genre would OldBoy be considered? I always thought psychological horror, so if PL eligible, I would say OB would qualify. Obviously, that’s my #1. #1 foreign, #1 horror, lots of #1’s for me, but not all time...

inri222 10-31-19 06:41 PM

Re: Facebook Poll: What's the Best Horror Film of the 21st Century?

I’d consider Pan’s Labyrinth fantasy and Oldboy a psychological drama/thriller.
