The cult film superstar was admitted to hospital after a “nasty spill” a week ago but subsequently suffered serious breathing complications.

Haig was then transferred to the ICU but despite reports his health improving, it got worse.

He appeared in several Rob Zombie movies and his last performance as the iconic character Captain Spaulding can be seen in the director’s latest 3 From Hell.

Haig had a long-running career in film and as well as appearing in horrors like The Devil’s Rejects, he also had a leading role on the television series Jason of Star Command, as the villain Dragos.

The actor appeared in several blaxpoitation movies during the 1970s opposite Pam Greer including Coffy, Foxy Brown and Black Mama, White Mama.

Haig also starred in the Quentin Tarantino movies Jackie Brown and Kill BIll Vol. 2.

Sid is survived by his wife Susan.

Re: RIP Sid Haig

I first saw him in THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, also with Pam Grier, in 1971 on a double bill with SHAFT. He got the biggest laughs in the movie. One of his lines, to an inexperienced partner new to their job of delivering supplies to a tropical women's prison as the partner is downing a bottle of island-grown moonshine, "Don't let your alligator mouth override your hummingbird ass." The biggest laugh came when the inmates, who've escaped and kidnapped the cruel female warden, force Haig at gunpoint to rape the warden. Haig leers at the warden and turns to grin at the girls and say, "You ain't gonna need that gun." Not a scene you can write today, but the kind of thing that played well at 1970s grindhouses.

Damn. R.I.P.
A thousand years ago I was at a horror convention with a friend of mine. They had some screenings afterwards and he was tired so he went back up to the hotel room while I stayed and drank some more. A while later I was heading back to my room and I apparently fell asleep in the elevator. I awoke to Sid asking if I was ok and what floor I was on. He was nice about it and we laughed when we were on the same floor. Thanks Sid.

Early memories of Sid Haig. :D

He did an interview on local TV for a horror con in town a few years ago. He seemed like a cool and gracious guy. RIP Sid.

Re: RIP Sid Haig

Sid always struck me as a nice guy who had a genuine enjoyment for the genre films he made. I have a fun but farfetched idea that Jackie Brown is actually Foxy Brown 20-something years later and when the judge, played by Sid Haig, sees her, he recognizes her from when he was a weird, smuggling pilot named Hays, and that's why he's relaxed with her. I know, it doesn't hold up, but it gives me a smile to think about.

He was a legend. Shame to have your obit mention Rob Zombie four times before mentioning any of the other things you did during a 50 year career.

That's actually not far from my reading of the film. I first extremely disliked Jackie Brown, but slowly warmed to it when I asked myself "where would Blaxploitation characters be in 20 years?", and I figured they'd go straight, but work crappy jobs due to criminal records. Then I began to appreciate what Quentin was doing.

I never had any of Sid's characters on the bench, though. But you're right, it's fun to think about.

RIP, Hawk (I just watched Pit Stop last night, not knowing Sid had died)

All through the years that I went to San Diego Comic-Con, one thing remained a constant, Sid Haig would be there signing. He had a loyal fanbase. Glad I finally relented so he could write "Shit the bed!" on a photo.

I saw Rob Zombie’s post that said he was dreading the news, but not shocked. He also seemed to confirm Haig had been sick for a long time.
