I saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan by myself on Father's Day 1982. My parents dropped me off and picked me up - I was 12. No friends either...just me. The beginning of a long life of solo movie-going.

I'm another old man from the "Pre-VHS" generation. I didn't see much because my parents just didn't care about movies, particularly the ones I enjoyed. I didn't get to see anything by myself until my last year of high school. The first PG-rated film I saw "Tales From The Crypt" which I found wonderfully gruesome. Then a few months later I saw my first R-Rated film, which was "Zardoz" , which seemed pretty trippy and weird to me (still does!). My next "R" was "French Connection 2", -which I loved, -though I was stunned by my first bombardment of R-Rated language in a film ( I knew the words, of course, I'd just never heard movie characters talk like that).

I can't remember if I had adult supervision for The Empire Strikes Back...I would've been 10 1/2 at the time. For sure there were no adults around when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in '81.

The first R-rated film I saw theatrically was in '82, and that was The Thing. I bought a ticket for Annie and may have taken a wrong turn and wound up seeing the John Carpenter film instead. Pretty sure that's how it happened.

Kids doing this is probably why The Thing tanked and Annie wound up being the 10th highest grossing movie of the year.

If we’re talking a situation where parents dropped me off with a friend or whatever to see a movie then I have no idea.

Hold on...every kid who made a detour into The Thing bought a ticket for Annie? Why not E.T. or The Secret of Nimh?

(Just messin' with ya.)

But hindsight has at least changed the stature of these films, if not the box office totals: fans still talk about The Thing and many consider it a classic. I don't hear that kind of talk about the 1982 Annie..if anyone mentions it at all.

I'm pretty sure my mom dropped my sister and me off to see Ghostbusters 2 together. I would have been 9 and my sister 7.

I for sure remember the first movie I saw with my friends where one of my friends drove was 12 Monkeys.

I moved near a movie theater late summer in the 7th grade and remember walking with a couple of friends to see Pump up the Volume. Now I am going to have to watch that gain, been at least a decade since I saw it last.

Either Batman & Robin (1997) or Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999)

It's hard to remember but the earliest I can remember seeing alone is Follow that Bird which I saw with a friend and I would have been 6.

Umm....what? Isn't that a bit odd to do on Father's day? Were they trying to pull a Jessie from Toy Story 2? Or did you have a sibling born right around 9 months later?

It might have been A Very Brady Sequel. My parents were in the next theater watching Kingpin.

As for getting dropped off and buying my own ticket... City of Angels, maybe?

You're right, they were intended for adults, yet both were rated "G". However, "Strain" (which I saw in theaters, too) had one of those "Caution" boxes in the ad, saying it had some mature or intense themes.

I remember going to drive in with a buddy and his family; we walked to a different screen than them and watched No Holds Barred.
I can remember the first but i do remember going with just friends to see Howard the Duck, Transylvania 6-5000 and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

I think it was the G-rated "speculation" film In Search of Noah's Ark. They made a couple films like that back in the 70s.

My first real memory of seeing an R rated movie with a friend might be Revenge of the Nerds.

The first movie I can remember seeing alone in a movie theater was 'Revenge of the Creature' (1955). I was 5 or 6 years old - probably 6, but possibly 5.

I'm pretty sure it was the 90-minute Nintendo commercial, "The Wizard."
