re: Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) S: Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina

To end the presentation, Disney revealed its Thanksgiving feature for 2020: “Raya and the Last Dragon.” The animated adventure film centers around Raya, a warrior in search of the last dragon in the fictional world of Kumandra. The production team pulled inspiration from South East Asia.

However, when she finds this creature, it’s not quite as she had expected. Sisu is trapped in human form and needs help to reclaim her power and transform into her true form.

Cassie Steele voices Raya while Awkwafina voices Sisu.

Looks like an awesome premise. Love when their movies have a strong cultural component because I don't think any studio does as much research into their movies as well as Disney. Glad they're going to go back to less sequels and more original movies.

Restore peace. Find the last dragon. Watch the new trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon, in theaters March 2021.

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well. From directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, co-directors Paul Briggs and John Ripa, producers Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho, and featuring the voices of Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as the last dragon Sisu, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Raya and the Last Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on March 2021.

Doesn’t look like anything groundbreaking but it looks good. If nothing else, the animation looks amazing.

Hmm, not a whole lot stood out, except for the water flowing up the stairs. So, Asian influenced, I hope they brought on actual Asian consultants so they don't whitewash this.

Yeah, this looks pretty neat. I'm looking forward to it, and based on my kids' reaction to the trailer, they're pretty hyped for it as well.

Another Mulan situation where you need to pay $30 to see this even if you have D+? I was patient with Mulan and can be patient with Raya and wait a few more months before it is no longer behind the D+ Premiere paywall. Unlike Mulan, I am actually more interested in seeing this film but living by myself I cannot justify spending $30 for a film that will be free for me to watch after 60-90 days.

Is "In Theaters" an option in the US? It wasn't for Mulan, but I would see this at the drive in if it was.

Yes, I believe that is the plan.

Mulan was in theatres in areas like China (where they thought it would make a bunch of money) that don't have Disney+.

Eh, not digging it. I don't if it's KMT or just the whole feel, but I'm not digging it.

Someone here was raving last year about how $30 was such a great deal when Mulan came out. and I don't think he even paid the $30.

Well I'm happy for the option to see some movies earlier if desired. Especially since theaters aren't open anywhere within an hour radius of me.

yeah, but at $30 or $20 for a 24-hr rental? No. Terrible idea. How much did Mulan cost to make vs. gross? So stupid. HBO Max clearly has their customers in mind even with so many subs coming from already paid cable subscriptions.

It's not a 24 hour rental. Like Mulan you pay the $30 and it will stay on your account as long as you're a Disney + subscriber. But, technically you don't own the movie. You are just paying for the rights to see it on your TV early in the theatrical window.

Not sure if you’re referring to me, and while I didn’t rave about it, I am fine with paying $30 for it, mostly due to my kids watching these repeatedly, and extended family seeing it as well. We’ll more than likely pay for this one as well because Disney is promoting that shit out of it and my kids have seen the promos so many damn times already.
