The Ultimate Cut.

EDIT - it may have gone out of print. It's almost $50 now.

Stone hasn’t gone anywhere. He just did Snowden. Documentaries as mentioned, but still around. Heck...didn’t he comment in The Movies special on CNN?

Yeah, I wonder about this too. There are not famous directors who made some successful movies and then they just faded out.

John Glen

Directed 5 James Bond movies in the 1980s. You would think that would make him an in demand action director. But, he only worked sporadically afterwards and hasn't worked since 2001.

I thought he did solid work on those Bond movies.

A lot of directors turn up doing TV (cable and otherwise) these days. I just saw John Badham's name on an episode of "Supernatural" and I know John Dahl also does a lot of episodic television

For me that one also sucked. Stone hasn't done anything good since the 90's.

We need to remember a lot of this has to do with studios, not the person's willingness to work. I bring this up because Donner had been trying to make Goonies 2 - he could never get it greenlit. Now he's trying (and failing) to get Warners to greenlight "Lethal Finale" (the fifth and final Lethal Weapon movie). He has a script, he has Gibson and Glover on board - he can't get Warners to pull the trigger (pardon the pun!).

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Mel Brooks! He hasn't made a movie since 1995. I don't think any young people even know he is.

Ari Aster: made a big splash with Hereditary and Midsommar...and then nothing.

I think Mel Brooks has been too preoccupied with trying not to die. The dude is 93 years old.

Reb Braddock made a short film called Curdled, which Quentin Tarantino saw at a film festival. He liked it so much he cast the lead actress in Pulp Fiction (as cab driver Esmeralda Villalobos) and also financed a feature length version of Curdled.

It's the only film Braddock ever directed.

^Memories of being so jazzed by Tarantino’s “Rolling Thunder” line. I still never got to see Hard Core Logo, btw.

*Back to topic* Although Alex Cox still remains in the public eye when it comes to discussing older cinema, I wished he would return to the director’s chair more frequently. I’m still a bit bummed that he didn’t get the directing duties for Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.

Bill Forsyth (Gregory's Girl, Local Hero, Housekeeping) hasn't made a movie since 1999's Gregory's Two Girls.

Maybe now that Criterion is releasing Local Hero, he'll decide to make a comeback.

Plus it's not like he hasn't been active in other endeavors.

Re: Do you miss/wonder about directors that kinda faded into obscurity?

I was thinking of Alan Parker (Fame, The Commitments, Midnight Express, Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning, The Wall, Birdy, Shoot the Moon), who hasn't done anything since 2003’s The Life of David Gale.

Turns out he retired in 2015.

It's fun and morbid film. I think I watched it way back on laserdisc.

Re: Do you miss/wonder about directors that kinda faded into obscurity?

Was thinking about this the other day when I, Robot was on.

What happened to Alex Proyas?

Dark City is one of the best movies of the 90s imo. Not sure what perception is now, but I have always really enjoyed I Robot.

Knowing
was also very interesting, and I would say under appreciated.

I realize Gods. of Egypt was a bomb, but I would have thought he had enough equity built up to at least get one more shot.

Re: Do you miss/wonder about directors that kinda faded into obscurity?

Chuck Russell ("The Blob", "The Mask") is apparently directing a Bollywood film.
Frank Darabont has only directed "The Walking Dead" pilot and four episodes of the "Mob City" miniseries.
Phil Alden Robinson directed Robin Williams in "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn" in 2014 and one episode of "The Good Fight".

Sneakers and Field of Dreams are great movies. I wouldn’t mind seeing him direct another movie.
