Welcome to Sudden Death aka Sudden Death 2 (2020) -- S: Michael Jai White
Action staple Michael Jai White (“Undisputed” franchise, “The Dark Knight”), fresh off flapping flares and kicking butt on “Undercover Brother 2”, is reuniting with Universal’s direct-to-disc division for a sequel to Jean-Claude Van Damme classic “Sudden Death”. The follow-up to John Hyams’ 1995 super-super-super-entertaining Diet-“Die Hard” is before the cameras in Winnipeg under the direction of “THRILLER” helmer Dallas Jackson. As in the original film, it’s up to an audacious security guard to fend off gun-toting rogues in a crowded sports arena. Marrese Crump (“The Protector 2”) and comic Gary Owen also star in “Sudden Death 2” (aka “Welcome to Sudden Death”). Considering the locations they’re utilizing, and the top-caliber director and star, I’m confident this is going to be well worth keeping tabs on. Griff Furst and Kim Todd are producing for 1440 Productions and Universal Home Entertainment. The production wraps September 4. Not much info about this, but Gary Owen (presumably the comic relief) posted this video during production. Currently filming in Winnipeg. It's supposed to come on DVD, BD and Digital next summer. |

This was pathetically bad. I wasn’t expecting much, but I at least though with MJW in it there would be some decent fights. Nope. He looked slow, like some current Segal shit.

I just finished it this afternoon. Yeah it wasn't very good. MJW did look slow and his fight scenes were poorly choreographed. The bad guys were pretty lame. The little girl who played his daughter was amusing.
The title made no sense considering it took place during a basketball game, but I know they wanted to name tie it in to the Van Damme movie. and I'm not sure I understood the point of the mid-credits bonus scene: Spoiler:

I think you’re giving too much credit to the people involved that they would even realize the original title had something to do with hockey.

If you’re looking for a decent recent movie with MJW, I’d recommend Triple Threat, Accident Man or even Never Back Down 3. Most of his low budget straight to video movies are trash.

This appears to be filmed in the ilk of the "terrorist threat" movie the guys from Workaholics were in a year or two ago. I suspect theirs was much better.

I noticed that Gene Quintano – who had a mild run of okay B-movies back in the 80's and 90's – gets a 'screenwriter' and 'based on a screenplay by' credits on this one, which would be his first movie in 14 years. I wonder if he wrote this back when the original came out just in case it was successful enough to warrant a sequel, and then stuck the script in a drawer until now.
