Next Goal Wins (2023, D: Waititi) S: Michael Fassbender, Elisabeth Moss
Deadline has learned that Taika Waititi’s Fox Searchlight project will be Next Goal Wins, based on the 2014 British soccer documentary from directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison.
That doc follows Dutch coach Thomas Rongen who attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners. The pic made its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and won Best Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards that year. Waititi is adapting the feature with Iain Morris. Imaginarium Productions’ Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish optioned the rights to the documentary Next Goal Wins in 2015 and brought it to Waititi who then brought on Garrett Basch to produce.
Variety first reported earlier today that Waititi had a mysterious project in the works at Searchlight, that plot details were unknown, Imaginarium was involved and that a fall shoot is currently planned. Searchlight is releasing the helmer’s awards season contender Jojo Rabbit on Oct. 18. The pic is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. Pic will also play Fantastic Fest.
Waititi starts production on Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder at the start of 2020. He has already completed the script.

Taika Waititi’s next movie Next Goal Wins for Fox Searchlight has added to its cast Oscar Kightley (Aroha Bridge, The Breaker Upperers), David Fane (The Barefoot Bandits, Westside), Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-0), Lehi Falepapalangi (Future Man, Hawaii Five-0), Semu Filipo (Harry), Uli Latukefu (Alien: Covenant), Rachel House (Thor: Ragnarok) are joining the cast with Kaimana in her debut role.
Searchlight has global rights to the pic, which is their second with Waititi following this fall’s Jojo Rabbit which has racked up north of $10M in its specialty release stateside. Production began last week in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Pic tells the story of the American Samoa soccer team, who suffered the worst loss in World Cup history, losing to Australia 31-0 in 2001. With the 2014 World Cup approaching, the team recruits a down on his luck, maverick coach (Michael Fassbender) to help turn their fate around. Waititi and Iain Morris wrote the script. Elisabeth Moss also stars.
Waititi is producing alongside Jonathan Cavendish and Garrett Basch, with Andy Serkis, Will Tennant, and Kathryn Dean serving as executive producers. Additional producers include Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, who directed the 2014 documentary from which the film is based. The film will be overseen by Searchlight Presidents of Production for Film and Television David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield, SVP of Production DanTram Nguyen, and VP Production Taylor Friedman.
Waititi stated, “I’ve just started production on my next film, Next Goal Wins. We have such an amazing cast and crew behind this film, and I’m stoked to be partnering once again with the lovely people at Fox Searchlight Pictures.”
“Taika is an incredible talent and master at bringing honesty and humanity to the surface in any story. We are thrilled to be working with him again on such an extraordinary true story of perseverance in the face of defeat. He has brought together a terrific group of actors, craftspeople and sports players to bring this unique story to life,” said Greenfield and Greenbaum.

Will Arnett replaces Armie Hammer in reshoots so Death on the Nile will probably be Hammer's last big movie.

AMC has taken a page from Regal's book . . . This was AMC's first "Screen Unseen" feature tonight.
Typical cliched sports movie with some Taika humor thrown in (and gratuitous Taika appearances). Usual "white savior elevates the brown athletes" fare. I knew nothing about this story (never saw or heard of the documentary), so I found the
to be an interesting element of the story.
Not Taika's best, but not a LOSER.

I saw this last night and thought it was decent enough. It's by-the-numbers and fairly predictable for sure, but enjoyable and has a handful of good laughs. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone who waits for digital, but I think it's worth seeing.

Same for me. I like it. It was on one of the bigger the screens at my usually theater but at an 8pm showing, my wife and I were the only ones in there.

Cool. I initially planned to see this in the theater, but it seemed like the reviews were lukewarm.

Saw it last night on Hulu. Good but probably won't be watching it again. Characters were fun but story just didn't pull me in as much as I thought it would.
