Top Gun. So what country is the enemy in the movie?

Its been a long long time since ive seen Top Gun on tv years ago anyway.

So what country is the enemy in the movie when the Navy pilots are doing their jet fighter flying training exercises?

The Chinese or the Russians or what?

Mod note: Since it is a question more about the movie itself (than specifically about the DVD) moving to the Movie Forum

Been awhile since I've seen it, and I don't recall if they are specifically named, but pretty sure it was the Russians.

It’s been years since I’ve seen the movie but I seem to remember the filmmakers going out of their way to NOT say who it was. But yeah, it was the Russians.

Are we discussing who were the bad guys in the original Top Gun? LMAO

The movie was made in the 80's and they specifically say Russian MIG fighters (even though the planes shown weren't MIGs).

Also, looking back they weren't even really the bad guys, we were. One of our planes got messed up and went into their airspace. We send fighters to "assist" and end up shooting down Russian planes in or very near to their own airspace. And we never know if the plane in distress was saved. Everyone was just cheering that we killed a bunch of Russian pilots for defending their country.

I haven't seen it but it was the 80s so it was the Russians.

First of all the question asks about who is the bad guy during their training exercises. During those exercises they are flying against the instructors, fellow Americans.

Second, as the film plainly states throughout they are being trained to engage Mig fighters. Migs are flown by many countries. During the ‘80s there were a lot of countries who flew the Mig that we may have gone to war with.

Lastly, whoever they were fighting, it was the Chinese who won https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hol...jacket-1225993

The film says a disabled ship has drifted into hostile waters.

Article says one of the early scripts stated North Korea.

This article says it was ultimately left ambiguous deliberately, and that the markings on the planes were duplicating the color schemes used by TG instructors at the time.

Zero chance it's the Chinese. Maybe it'll be Kamistan like on the show 24.
