Mank (2020, D: David Fincher) S: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried - Netflix
David Fincher has signed on to direct his first feature film since 2014, a biopic revolving around “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, with Gary Oldman tapped to play the titular role.
The film, titled “Mank,” is based on a script by Fincher’s late father, Jack, who had penned the script prior to his death in 2003.
Specific plot details are vague, but sources say the story will follow Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of the script for “Citizen Kane” — which would go on to be considered one of the best films of all time — alongside director Orson Welles. Despite the film’s critical success, the script was the only part of the film to win an Oscar.
The film will also be shot in black and white, with production scheduled to begin in November.
Fincher will produce alongside producing partner Cean Chaffin and Douglas Urbanski.
“Mank” marks Fincher’s first feature since Fox’s “Gone Girl” starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Fincher has primarily worked in television since “Gone Girl,” partnering with Netflix to direct shows such as “House of Cards,” “Mindhunter” and “Love, Death & Robots.”
Oldman, who won the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” last year, has been busy shooting several films including Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat,” which is also at Netflix; “The Woman in the Window” and “The Courier.” He is repped by APA and Douglas Management.

I’m always excited for a new Fincher movie!
I think I mentioned it in the Casablanca thread but the story of Citizen Kane is somewhat boring but the story behind the movie is pretty fascinating. I wonder how much this new movie will go into the risks involved in writing a film based on William Randolph Hearst and the origin of “Rosebud”?

With the exception of some incredibly unnecessary CGI I’m Panic Room, I’ve always thought that Fincher’s use of CGI was masterful. Most of the time, I don’t realize there’s a computer effects shot until I see a BTS featurette or something.

They're gonna be filming this down the street in the next day or two. Got the filming department notice on street closure/detours.

It looks like this will come out a little later than expected.
Netflix will release David Fincher‘s Mank in select theaters in November before the black-and-white film begins streaming on Dec. 4, Collider has learned.

Great teaser although I think it’ll get the attention of movie buffs but not so much your average Netflix viewer.
Either way, I’m excited! It’s this year’s The Irishman for me.

Man, I hope it has better pacing that The Irishman. I still haven't made it much past the halfway point on that one. I figured it would be slow paced due to the run time, but I didn't know it was something that could put me to sleep in the first hour.

Did anyone else see RKO 281 with Liev Schreiber as Wells, John Malkovich as Mank, Melanie Griffith as Marion Davis and James Cromwell as Hearst? I really liked that one. Was an HBO film in 1999, for some reason it isn’t in their HBO Max library now. This looks to be a much more stylish version of the same story but making Mank the protagonist instead of Wells.

RKO 281 is awesome - such an underrated little film. I have the Blu-ray of that, which was included in the deluxe edition of Citizen Kane a few years ago. I think it was the BD, or the DVD. It came with the set.

I dig the poster. I also noticed that in the credits - says it was "photographed in Dynamic Range," so I take it it has HDR right from the get go and won't be layered in when it gets converted over to home media? I mean, if it even gets a home media release since it's Netflix and all.
