It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

Simple question.
Poll responses are private to avoid embarrassment among the cinema elite.

Note: seeing the film in part does NOT count as having seen it. If you haven't seen all 102 minutes, then vote no.

Yep, usually every other summer since it's part of Austin's Paramount theater summer series.

It was one of the first Blu-rays I bought. I bought it and The Longest Day to see the capabilities of the format on older, B&W films. To my eye, it looked great.

I saw it during a film studies class in my last semester of college and I didn't think it was a good movie.

Love the movie and have it seen it many times. Seeing Casablanca in my teen years and Notorious in my college years forever cemented my lifelong crush on Ingrid Bergman.

Of course. First time was when the DVD came out. 1998/1999 I think. I would have been 20. Many times since then.

I remember thinking, “That Rick Blain is as Antifa AF.”

you didn't even get his name right.

Anyway, I think it's interesting that roughly one in six people who voted in the poll so far, on a forum dedicated to film and home media, haven't seen it. I imagine it's a much bigger number in the real world, especially for people under 30.

It sure would be cool if there were some way to reach out of the current generation to get them interested in the classics, maybe by way of making reasonable connections between the plot/characters and hot topics of the modern era, and not judging them for having not seen it yet.

Good discussion, boys.

I’ve only seen it once. Good movie and very iconic. Not one that I have a lot of desire to go back to and revisit personally.

One of the first DVDs I bought, and probably my favorite film of all time.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

I've seen it about 3 times. Time for another watch I think.

It's without question a GREAT film, but I don't think its either Bogey, Bergman or Curtiz's best. That's not a knock on the film either, just a comment on how truly great those 3 were.

Along with Gone With the Wind, Casablanca is one of the biggest gaps in my film history. I keep telling myself it's something I've saving for my old age.

It's my all time favorite film. I could watch it everyday. I have seen it more times than I can count.

I'm not a fan of Gone With the Wind. I appreciate its place in film history, but the acting is too "stage-y" for me. Casablanca, on the other hand, is timeless. The characters seem like real people and that's one of the reasons it has endured so long.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

I first saw Casablanca when I was 18 and working in a video store. I’ve probably watched it once a year ever since. It is my all-time favorite movie and turned me onto Humphrey Bogart movies in general. I now own around 50 of his movies. His are the only movies I collect.

While I’ve enjoyed many movies from that period, in my opinion, Casablanca is the greatest American movie ever made. I've read several books covering the making, history and lore of that film. It's very interesting how that movie came to be.

If you’re a fan of the film I recommend Michael Walsh’s As Time Goes By. It’s a book continuation of their story and I enjoyed that as well. It was nice to see how it all played out after the film ends.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

I agree 100% about getting today's generation watching the classics. When my twelve year old son told me his class was having a mock trial and he was on the jury that was the perfect opportunity for him and I to watch 12 Angry Men with Henry Fonda, another favorite of mine. Despite his reservations on watching an old black and white movie he appreciated the story and how it played out. I think he was also impressed by the fact an entire movie takes place in one setting. He knows Casablanca is my favorite movie and we'll certainly watch it when he's a little older.
