The Big Sleep is muddled and confusing. Try Murder My Sweet first. And Double Indemnity of course.

I was citing the line as it's commonly misquoted, not as it's actually said in the film. That was deliberate.

Better yet, Passage To Marsaille! The movie contains a flashback inside of a flashback.

I checked my TCM recording and it is 4:3 on a HD channel.

Is that the way it is suppose to be?

It is one of those movies that is probably better watching on a rainy or overcast day and not in July.

For instance you still have to have exposition where nobody in real life does that.
The first movie I ever saw where the characters talked like the real people I knew in my life was Patti Rocks in 1988.

Yes, that's the way it's supposed to be: pre-widescreen, Academy ratio.

Yes, that is the correct aspect ratio.

That's a wonderful film. Wish I had a copy of it on Blu-ray...or DVD even.

Amazon shows no disk release whatsoever.

Yeah, there is nothing romantic or nostalgic about noir. Seconding this list of movies, with an emphasis on Notorious and Double Indemnity, and adding The Postman Always Rings Twice as another must see.

I guess that makes sense. A little art house release from 30 years ago that never really made any money, or star anybody famous. I saw it at the old Varsity theater on the UT Drag, and I had a used VHS copy of it that I picked up at a video store clearance. I can't even say for certain that it is a good movie, but I remember being struck that it was the first movie I ever saw where the two guys talked (and sounded) like real working-class guys from the rust belt.

I saw it in Los Angeles when it was released and it was somewhat popular at the Art House theaters. I learned about it through the LA Weekly at the time. (And I think it was even mentioned on the Siskel and Ebert show as being a good film.)

Chris Mulkey went on to a successful career in TV and the movies playing small parts and is still working to this day. (Although he is probably not very recognizable to most people.)

Murder My Sweet and Double Indemnity are also great - but I prefer The Big Sleep. And the funny thing is I've never been confused by the plot.

And any movie with a character named Eddie Mars has to be great!

Crap! I forgot to set my DVR. If it comes on again, would someone post the information? Thanks.

And THIS right here is the problem with movie watching in today's world. So many of the classics (or just other movies in general) are missed and forgotten about just because people are lazy (sometimes myself included) I'd say 90% of the population don't even care about what they watch. They just simply want to be entertained. It's media consumption at the lowest common denominator. That's why YouTube is filled with good quality entertainment/education that only get a few thousand views but watch the idiot eating a hot tortilla chip and that gets millions of views.

Okay I'll get off my soapbox.

That is one of the most inane things I've ever read. You won't watch a movie because it's not the way people talk? I can't think of a single movie that has realistic dialogue. There's just too much out there for someone to have the time to watch everything, so you have to choose what you want to watch and what you don't. In order to watch a classic, You really need to be in the right mood to watch it. If someone is wanting to be entertained, they are more likely to choose a modern film over one that is 60-80 years old. If someone is choosing a movie this old to watch they are very likely watching it for nostalgia, historical reference, or because they have an interest in cinema and film.

Double Indemnity is a great film noir. I recommend some of these if you haven't seen it. Kiss of Death(Richard Widmark debut as psychopath Tommy Udo), The Killlers, Laura, D.O.A, Night and the City, The Asphalt Jungle.

OUT OF THE PAST (1947) with Robert Mitchum never gets old. "If I gotta die, I want to die last."

Same with WHITE HEAT (1949) with James Cagney. "If I turn my back long enough for Big Ed to put a hole in it--there'd be a hole in it."

Extra points for DOA. I still have a really old public domain dvd copy of it. Night and the City is a really great movie and I highly second that one.
In A Lonely Place, Key Largo, and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers are three of my favorites.
