Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

Saw it on a giant screen when I was in high school (in the 1990s) at a theater that showed movies like that on Sunday afternoons. I went with my first girlfriend (we were just friends by this time) and I remember it was only us and two little old ladies in the theater. Thought the movie was fine - never had any inkling to revisit it though. Just checked it off the viewing list.

Many, many times but prefer the remake.

I have not, but am not against watching it if it ever comes to hulu or amazon prime. Not spending $3-4 to rent it though.

I actually have been trying to watch a lot more older movies lately, but the streaming services don't really have a great selection on those. Amazon Prime has a bunch of 70's stuff, but they don't go back a ton further than that (or I can't find them at least).

Go to a library and see if they have it on DVD and check it out for free.

Joe, double check your Vudu account (if you have one). Casablanca and a few other flicks were added to my account for free as some sort of promotion for A Star Is Born.

This might be the one movie I've seen more than 100 times.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

CASABLANCA was my mother's favorite movie and when it played at a repertory theater with THE MALTESE FALCON when I was 14 I alerted my mother and she took me. My first trip to a repertory theater. On our way home, we passed a parade in midtown Manhattan and who should I see marching, but Robert F. Kennedy! (This was 1967.)

I've since seen CASABLANCA close to 30 times, way more times than my mother saw it.

Same here...I've lost count, but certainly quite a few times.

Casablanca is a masterpiece and never disappoints.
It's a story that lifts the spirits too: the good guys win.

It's almost always in rotation on Turner Classic Movies.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

So we're at 1 in 5 forum members having never seen the film. That's higher than I expected for this place, honestly.

For those that love it, what's your #1 favourite thing about it that you would use in order to get others to see it sooner than later? Note that "It's a classic for fucks sake" isn't really compelling or sufficient, because if it was, most of those who haven't seen it would have, by now.

Blaine being an Antifa Supersoldier doesn't count, either.

Trivia question. What's the name of Sydney Greenstreet's club?
Bonus trivia question. In what movie is the above a trivia question and what actor doesn't know the answer?

I've actually been kind of judicious in my viewing of Casablanca. I don't want to get burned out on it, so I only watch it every 3 years or so (on average).

I think I've seen The Petrified Forest about 15 or 16 times since 1981 or so, but Casablanca is so iconic and quoted and spoofed that I feel like I've seen it more.

I love the dialogue, the plot, the acting, the atmosphere, the direction... I don't have a single favorite thing when it comes to Casablanca.

Re: It's 2019: Have you seen Casablanca (1942)?

I've been wanting to watch this movie for a while now. I grew up seeing it referenced in everything, and of course clips like "Here's looking at you, kid" and "play it again, Sam." I think it was only after reading up on the plot and seeing scenes in Rick's club that got me interested in it.

I have little interest in other classics like Gone With the Wind and Citizen Kane.

Rick never says, "Play it again, Sam." He says, "You played it for her, you can play it for me. Play it!"

But if you don't get around to watching this movie by the end of the month you WILL be required to turn in all of your DVD's and Blu Rays and give up movie watching for a period of no less than six months, and no more than a year. The punishment fits the crime.

Damn. So what's the punishment for never having watched The Thing?

I have Casablanca on DVD and I'll probably be watching it within the week and come back to post my thoughts in this thread, so I should be good.

I agree ^^

My favorite thing, I think, is that for all of its romantic fatalism it’s really funny.
