Disney’s The Little Mermaid - live action (D: Marshall)

I thought there was a thread already. I guess not.

Melissa McCarthy may be ready to help some poor unfortunate souls in Disney’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.”

Sources tell Variety that while the deal is not yet completed, McCarthy is in early talks to play the sea witch Ursula in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

As Disney preps its live-action version of the undersea tale, there’s a lot of buzz about the cast. Disney and the production team behind it are looking to make contemporary and compelling casting choices, while still paying homage to the beloved animated original.

“Mary Poppins Returns” director Rob Marshall is helming. The film will incorporate the original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script.

Jessica Virtue and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for the studio.

Despite the fact that these live-action remakes are going to wear out their welcome at some point (my personal opinion is sooner rather than later, but I think Lion King will do gangbusters, so who knows) this could actually be decent. However, Rob Marshall is a terrible Director. He makes “prestige” movies that just aren’t very good. I don’t get it.

I would have picked Bette Midler since I have never heard McCarthy sing. But it's not as if Ursula needed a lot of range.

Is Lindsay Lohan still gunning to play Ariel? I don't know, can mermaids chain smoke under the sea?

Actually Rebel Wilson did a pretty good job, too, at the Hollywood Bowl.

Well who did not see this coming miles away? At this point it will only be interesting to find out which Disney animated feature is not queued up for a live action adaptation...

Is this any worse than the period where they made movies based off theme park rides due to the success of POTC? Or all the cheap direct to video animated sequels? Re-releasing Endgame and trying to pass it off as a director 's cut?
Just another shameless cash grab.

We're still in that period with them making movies off theme park rides my friend. "Jungle Cruise" comes out Summer of 2020.

I'm waiting for a gritty live-action dark wing duck. Damn it, someone get Zack Snyder on the horn.

Other than sequels, I don’t think any amusement park ride movies were made after POTC. The Country Bears came out before it and The Haunted Mansion came out just five months after it. Both were failures and Disney hasn’t attempted another until the upcoming Jungle Cruise.

i guess Tomorrowland might fit into this category, but even that is only four years old, so clearly not a response to a trend from the early 2000s.

And don't forget about "The Tower of Terror" (1997). TV movie.

They should have gotten Harvey Feirstein to play Ursula.

Re: Disney’s The Little Mermaid - live action (D: Marshall)

Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are in talks to go under the sea for Disney’s live-action remake of its animated classic The Little Mermaid.

The feature project, with Rob Marshall sitting in the director’s chair, is casting up on several fronts, with Melissa McCarthy already in talks to play the villain in the story, the sea witch Ursula.

The animated movie loosely retold the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of a mermaid named Ariel who yearns to be human after she falls in love with a prince. Ariel makes a deal with Ursula, who grants her wish but takes her voice.

If deals make, Tremblay would give life to Flounder, Ariel’s best friend, who is a fish. Jason Marin voiced him in the 1989 original, and the character had singing duties in the Broadway adaptation.

Awkwafina would play Scuttle, the seagull friend of the red-headed princess. Buddy Hackett voiced the character in the animated movie.

The feature will showcase all the well-known songs and will also have new material. Original composer Alan Menken is teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Menken composing and co-writing new lyrics with Miranda.

Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Mary Poppin Returns and executive produced Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producing Little Mermaid, as is Miranda.

Since breaking out with Room, Tremblay established himself as one of the most in demand in Hollywood’s under-20 set. He starred with Julia Roberts in the hit drama Wonder and was a key part of Shane Black’s Predator. He next appears with Ewan McGregor in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.
He is repped by UTA.

Awkwafina stole scenes in last year’s Crazy Rich Asians and will be seen in Sony’s upcoming Jumanji sequel. She is also voicing a character in Netflix’s upcoming series, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. She is currently shooting Breaking News in Yuba County and stars in the well-reviewed Sundance drama, The Farewell, out later in July,. She is repped by UTA, Artists First and attorney Isaac Dunham.

Tremblay is a good choice for Flounder.

That’s a well thought out and perfect casting choice...so of course Hollywood is pushing for McCarthy.

Just an amusing aside, I was watching a YouTube channel talking about Awkwafina being added to the cast. I had captions on. Sure enough, her name was spelled "Aquafina."
