That's why I had the initial reaction of switching the ethnicities when I heard Harry Styles was going to be cast as Prince Eric. It still places the good looking white guy as the desired Prince to be with. Pocahontas, Belle and Tiana had to learn to love their Princes. Ariel is enamored with Prince Eric the moment she saw him.

Of course, this is just insecure me venting about Asian women who date White guys because they're seen as a status symbol.

Yep! That's another reason why there is no shock the Prince will be White.

Naw, it's not just you. I know we've had this discussion here in the past. It's a "thing". PoC have watched this dynamic in Hollywood FOREVER. White guy gets the Asian girl/Black Girl/Latina/etc. But when it's a Asian guy, he can either only get the Asian girl or nothing.

Javier Bardem in Talks to Play King Triton in Disney's Live-Action 'Little Mermaid'
JULY 17, 2019 2:24PM by Aaron Couch

The actor would join a cast that includes Halle Bailey's Ariel and Harry Styles.

The Little Mermaid has found its king.

Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton in the live-action remake of the Disney classic, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. He would join a cast that includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, daughter of Triton, and Harry Styles as the human Prince Eric.

Other castmembers include Melissa McCarthy as the villain Ursula, as well as Akwafina and Jacob Tremblay.

Director Rob Marshall is behind the project, an update of the 1989 animated pic that won original song and score Oscars for Alan Menken. For the new film, Menken will update his score and compose a new song with lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and executive produced the studio’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing Little Mermaid. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producers, as is Miranda.

The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake. Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the original film. That was remedied, however, in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several numbers, including two solos.

Bardem won a best supporting actor Oscar for 2007's No Country for Old Men. He will appear in next year's Dune, Denis Villeneuve's big-budget adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel. Bardem is repped by WME.

The casting comes as Disney is preparing to launch The Lion King, its third remake of an animated classic this year following Dumbo and Aladdin. It is expected to gross $150 million-plus in its opening weekend.

A black Ariel, a white Prince Eric, and a Spanish King Triton? This new movie is shaping up to look like the cover of a college sociology textbook.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, I didn't know this was really a thing. So are you, devilshalo, asian and jealous that Asian women date white guys? That's interesting because in my family we all ended up with white people. Honestly more because of what's available. This is getting too personal but anyways, I'm an Asian guy but actually have a weird thing where I'm not really attracted to Asian women. And I think that's mainly because growing up the only Asian women I knew were family. Just curious how it was for other Asians growing up in the US.

Apologies because this may derail the thread. I don't even feel that strongly about it but wanted to address it anyway.

This isn't the first time I've heard this exact sentiment, which is weird because I don't think I've ever heard any other ethnicity say it, but Asian American author Celeste Ng infamously wrote a tweet saying pretty much the exact same thing:

And then you had stuff like Netflix's "All the Boys I've Loved Before" which is also based on a novel. I do think it's natural to be attracted to people based on who you're surrounded by/grow up with and who's available, and obviously Asians are a minority, but another influence is the stereotype perpetuated by movies and TV shows that Asian women are desirable and Asian men are not (you could also argue the opposite is usually true, except reversed, with African American men and women). It isn't just media, but it is prevalent (or at least was):

Not to get into it too much, here's an article about it:
https://planamag.com/celeste-ng-cont...s-167717287ba1

This doesn't excuse attacks on these women by seemingly insecure men, though:
https://www.thecut.com/2018/10/when-...asian-men.html

tl;dr: Like who you like, but media does influence thought and perpetuates stereotypes, which is why it gets brought up when we discuss media.

Honestly for me, I grew up in Hawaii so there was very little diversity. Also, there was a lot of pressure to remain ethnically pure, to carry on a pure bloodline. My cousins are all mixed (mostly Chinese/Japanese) and I remain the only full blooded Chinese grandchild (which made me the favorite with my father's father.) I'm 51 now and I don't care anymore. But as a teen, it was frustrating.

I don’t know. How’d the Lion King do? Did it out earn Aladdin? Did it surpass the 1994 original?

I'm fascinated they released their big two the same summer and they didn't steal box office from each other at all, that's nuts.

Never underestimate a parent's need to find something for their kids to do during the summer. (plus throw in the parent's own nostalgia)

Wow. The 1994 version surpassed the animated Aladdin. Amazing that Lion King remake can’t do likewise. Maybe it will eventually.

Harry Styles Passes on 'Little Mermaid' Role
AUGUST 13, 2019 4:34PM by Mia Galuppo
The former One Direction performer would have starred opposite 'Grown-ish' actress Halle Bailey, who is set to play Ariel.

Harry Styles will not be heading under the sea for Disney's live-action Little Mermaid.

The Dunkirk actor is no longer in talks to play Prince Eric in the Rob Marshall-directed musical, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Grown-ish actress Halle Bailey is set to play Ariel, with Melissa McCarthy playing Ursula, Jacob Tremblay voicing Flounder and Awkwafina voicing Scuttle.

Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns and executive produced Guy Ritchie's live-action Aladdin remake, is producing. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producers on Little Mermaid, as is Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Styles made his feature acting debut in Christopher Nolan's WWII epic Dunkirk and was recently in consideration to play Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's movie musical (the part later went to Austin Butler).

re: Disney’s The Little Mermaid - live action (2023, D: Marshall)

EXCLUSIVE: Sources are saying that Cameron Cuffe, who starred on the sci-fi series Krypton, and Jonah Hauer-King have tested to play the role of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid, the live-action/CG feature film adaptation in the works at Disney being directed by Rob Marshall.

Both actors tested Monday for Marshall in London at Pinewood Studios, we hear. Harry Styles reportedly had been in talks for the role of Prince Eric, the love interest of Ariel in the original animated film, but that casting did not materialize.

The cast of the pic based on the already includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. Javier Bardem is circling as King Triton.

David Magee penned the script.

Marc Platt, Marshall, Lin-Manuel Miranda and John DeLuca are producing the pic for Disney. The original film’s composer Alan Menken is back to write new music and will craft the lyrics with Miranda.

Cuffe played Seg-El on Krypton, the Man of Steel’s grandfather, on the Superman origin series, which ended its run after two seasons this year. The London-born actor was relatively unknown when he landed the lead role, having previously done several stage productions and appearing in the Stephen Frears’ 2016 pic Florence Foster Jenkins. He also recurred on the ITV drama The Halcyon.

Hauer-King, a dual UK-U.S. citizen, played Laurie in the 2017 BBC/Masterpiece limited series Little Women opposite Emily Watson, Kathryn Newton and Maya Hawke. His credits include this year’s pic A Dog’s Way Home.

Disney did not comment Tuesday. One source close to production tells us there’s a large pool of Prince Erics in the mix and Marshall has been auditioning a lot of actors for the part.

Looks like that explains why Cameron Cuffe said no to the CW crossover. He was auditioning for Little Mermaid.

'Little Mermaid' Live-Action Remake Finds Its Prince Eric in Jonah Hauer-King
NOVEMBER 12, 2019 5:11PM by Borys Kit

While the rest of the call sheet was filled out in the summer, the part of Eric took unexpectedly longer.

London-based rising actor Jonah Hauer-King has nabbed the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of its animated classic The Little Mermaid.

Halle Bailey has already been cast as Ariel, the title character, and the call sheet also includes Melissa McCarthy as the witch Ursula, along with Javier Bardem as King Triton. Jacob Tremblay will voice Flounder, while Awkwafina is the voice of Scuttle and Daveed Diggs is voicing Sebastian the crab.

While the rest of the roles were filled in the summer, the part of Eric took unexpectedly longer. Harry Styles was in talks with the studio for a protracted period, but that ultimately fell apart. Disney then spent months scouring the seven seas for the right actor. In the end, Hauer-King and Cameron Cuffe, the star of the Syfy series Krypton, did several rounds of reading/testing before a decision was finally made.

Hauer-King, repped by CAA and UK's United Agents, appeared in this year's A Dog's Way Home and a BBC adaptation of Little Women in 2017. He also stars on the BBC war drama World on Fire. He previously appeared opposite Kenneth Branagh in a West End production of The Entertainer.

Rob Marshall is set to direct The Little Mermaid, which will showcase all the well-known songs and also have new material. Original composer Alan Menken is teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Menken composing and Miranda writing.

Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns and executive produced Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producing Little Mermaid, as is Miranda.

An early 2020 production start is planned.
