Can you really call it a massive failure though? It still ends up in the same place in the end (on Disney+), they just now have more money from it.

Disney+ Premium was supposed to take over the theatrical phase, then it should have gone to VOD (like Vudu and Amazon for $20) and then eventually hit Disney+ regular. They definitely didn't make as much as a regular-times theatrical release, but they still made something in there. Putting it straight to Disney+ just kills those first two phases.

I guess we'll know for sure in 27-ish days when they do their earnings call.

I wonder if it will get some theatrical release in places like Canada. As of last night the local theatre is still running the trailer for it.

Never would have thought back in '94 Trent Reznor would one day do music for a Disney movie. Who does he think he is, Mark Mothersbaugh?

I believe I read in one of the press releases that the film would be available theatrically in territories where Disney+ is not available.

I'm sad it won't make it to theaters. Glad that we're getting it included that's nice. I think this is a much harder sell since it's an unknown property. I don't see many people paying $30 for it.

A much harder sell for a new Pixar film with Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey vs a star-free live-action Mulan without the comedic aspects or the songs? That doesn't seem like a harder sell to me. New IP Pixar films have done really well except for The Good Dinosaur and Onward.

How is it any harder of a sell than any movie coming out on VOD?

Seems like Disney just threw in the towel on this one. They could have easily gone the $20 rental like everyone else for 6 weeks and then drop it on D+ to earn some revenue.

I agree Pixar's brand new IPs have done well in theaters. I don't know maybe I'm wrong. But for some reason $30 seems high for what's basically a PPV movie. I think people are less willing to take a chance on a movie with this pay structure. It just seems more expensive and like more of a commitment then if it was released in theaters. I think there's something to be said where going to see a movie is more of an outing. Like a family chooses to have an outing and then will choose a movie to watch. So the money spent is not only on the movie itself but an activity as well. Where as if you're home and have plenty of other options it might be hard to swallow $30. Mulan seemed like it would be a safer bet for people to spend money on. Plus it had quite a bit of anticipation surrounding it's release whereas people might have been a lot more likely to wait to see Soul when it would be released eventually without having to pay extra. Me personally I'd much rather spend money on Soul then Mulan. But yeah I agree I don't know why they didn't decide to try to profit on the movie if even for a little bit. Maybe they are afraid of backlash and complaining about too many upcharged premium movies? Maybe Mulan really bombed worse then we know and they figure the small amount of money they would recoup would be worth more as what could be seen as a good faith gesture to their customers?

$30 is too high but that's on Disney. Seems like everyone else is in the $20 ballpark which is more reasonable, which is why I chose that number.

I thought this was great. Saw the trailer so many times when the theatres were still open, and really like that they didn't show anything beyond setting up the first twenty minutes, so the movie was filled with a lot of surprises. The visuals were beautiful. Lots of funny parts. Very moving.

Not sure if it was necessary at the end
Spoiler:
to give him a "second chance"
but since it was just a few seconds it didn't spoil the poignancy for me.

I figure adults will get more out of this than kids.

Great movie. It sort of reminded me of Inside Out a bit, but it was definitely its own thing. I agree that adults likely will get more out of this than kids, but as an adult, I'm good with that.

Beautiful. Just a pure, simply beautiful film that you think would go one way, but goes entirely different. Everything: the sound, the music, the animation, the voices, the story, simply wonderful film making.

Not sure how I cared for some of the messages in this one. That was a lot of crap heaped upon 22 who was a mashup of Joy and Disgust. It's ok to not have a purpose, but one shouldn't give up their dream. Not sure why Joe couldn't be both a music teacher and in the jazz quartet.

I really enjoyed this. Foxx was great as Joe and I loved his banter with 22. Tina Fey played that character so well with heart and humor.

And yeah this movie is pretty deep and deals with some dark themes of life and death and making the most of your time on earth.

I watched WW84 and this today and while the comparison is probably unfair, this was a far superior movie.

Very enjoyable, could see the plot developments from a mile away, but still very well done.

I thought one of the messages of the movie is that there is no "single purpose". Joe was down on teaching because he believed he was supposed to be performing, yet once he got that he still wasn't satisfied. It wasn't until he finally appreciated all the experiences of his life and the people he knew that felt peace.
