I'm going to laugh if it turns out to be a better Anakin story than George gave us. A charismatic but flawed hero who slips into darkness while trying to do the right thing.

I need to re-read the trilogy, only read it once.

Agreed. I mean, a quick, throwaway line about losing the will to live AFTER JUST GIVING BIRTH TO TWINS makes total sense and can tie and entire series together?

Yeah, that's good. They should also have super-advance technology for futuristic weaponry and light-speed space travel, but not even 1960s sonography technology. That way she won't even know she's pregnant with twins!

re: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023, D: Lawrence) -- prequel

Tom Blyth, who stars in Epix’s Western series Billy the Kid, is the first actor to officially sign up for Lionsgate’s prequel to The Hunger Games, the studio announced Monday.

The company’s Hunger Games franchise had earned over $3 billion globally when it wrapped up in 2014, and it is now looking to extend the lifespan with the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ latest novel in the dystopian series, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Francis Lawrence, who directed three of the four Hunger Games movies — Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part One, and Mockingjay Part Two — is back in the helmer’s seat with franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her partner Brad Simpson back as producers. Lawrence is also producing.

The logline, per the studio: Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

Blyth will play the young Snow, who was portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original movies.

“Coriolanus Snow is many things — a survivor, a loyal friend, a cutthroat, a kid quick to fall in love, and a young man ambitious to his core,” said Lawrence in a statement. “Tom’s take on the character showed us all the complex ambiguities of this young man as he transforms into the tyrant he would become.”

Said Jacobson: “Tom’s performance will both fulfill and disrupt everything you think you know about Coriolanus Snow. He’s a tremendous talent who will show why Snow always lands on top.”

The role is big opportunity for Blyth, who recently appeared in HBO’s The Gilded Age. The first Hunger Games platformed a rising Jennifer Lawrence into a global superstar and also blew strong winds for co-stars as such as Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for years afterwards. With the property continuing to be a best-seller, and Songbirds and Snakes also being a No. 1 best-seller, the interest in the movie could prove high. Nov. 17, 2023, is the scheduled release date for the prequel.

“Tom Blyth is an explosive rising talent whose mesmerizing and charismatic presence makes him an exciting actor and perfect for this leading role,” stated Lionsgate’s motion picture group president, Erin Westerman.

re: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023, D: Lawrence) -- prequel

Lionsgate has cast Rachel Zegler, who played Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novel will debut in theaters worldwide on November 17, 2023.

Zegler will play Lucy Gray, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. “When you read Suzanne’s book, Lucy Gray’s emotional intelligence, physical agility, and fiercely powerful, determined singing voice shine through. Rachel embodies all of those skills — she is the perfect choice for our Lucy Gray,” Nathan Kahane, president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.

The prequel’s logline, from Lionsgate reads: “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.”

The latest draft of the screenplay is by Michael Lesslie. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are overseeing on behalf of the studio.

Rachel Ziegler sure is the “It” girl right now, isn’t she?

Not that I’m complaining, I’ve only seen her in WSS but she’s very likable.

She's been cast as Maria in West Side Story, as Snow White in the Disney live action movie, as the love interest in the Shazam sequel and now as the new Hunger Games protagonist. Either she's super-talented or she's got the world's greatest agent.

She's a good choice for Lucy... especially when it comes to the third act of the book. I really hope they stick to the book.

re: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023, D: Lawrence) -- prequel

Josh Andrés Rivera will be returning to work with his West Side Story star Rachel Zegler in Lionsgate’s growing ensemble prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The prequel centers around 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), who as we know will become the tyrannical President of Panem. He is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.

Rivera will play Sejanus Plinth, a close friend of young Coriolanus Snow, and the mentor to a tribute from District 2.

As Deadline first told you, other castmembers include Jerome Lance who will play Marcus, the tribute from District 2. Ashley Liao will play Clemensia Dovecote, one of Coriolanus’s closest friends and mentor to a tribute from District 11. Knox Gibson will play Bobbin, tribute from District 8; Mackenzie Lansing will play Coral, tribute from District 4; while Aamer Husain will play Felix Ravinstill, the mentor to a tribute from District 11.

Francis Lawrence is returning to the franchise to direct for a theatrical worldwide release on Nov. 17, 2023. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also returning to produce for the franchise with Lawrence. Author Suzanne Collins, Tim Palen, and Jim Miller are EPs. Michael Lesslie wrote the latest draft off Collins and Michael Arndt’s previous script based on the author’s bestselling novel.

My guess is the box office for this will be analogous to what those Fantastic Beasts movies have been when compared to the Harry Potter franchise. My interest level in this is pretty low, and I liked the first series of films.

Only the first was actually about Fantastic Beasts, and its main character is no longer central to the story. It's a horribly misleading tagline for the series.

You're probably right.

I don't think the book was a smash like the Hunger Games trilogy, and I'm not sure how much interest there will be in the movies without Katness/JLaw.

Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer has joined the cast of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opposite Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler. Schafer will play Tigris Snow, Coriolanus’s cousin and confidante, who advises him in everything – from his role as mentor to the core of his moral compass. Francis Lawrence is directing.

Not bad casting. Schwartzman could be related to Tucci. They look close enough.

re: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023, D: Lawrence) -- prequel

EXCLUSIVE: For the upcoming prequel to The Hunger Games, the odds are in its favor for the highly-anticipated project to add an Emmy-winning star to its cast. Sources tell Deadline, Peter Dinklage is set to join the growing ensemble of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes. Dinklage will play Casca Highbottom, dean of the Academy. Dinklage will star in the film opposite Tom Blyth, who will play the young Coriolanus Snow, and Rachel Zegler, as tribute Lucy Gray Baird. Francis Lawrence, who previously directed the franchise’s Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part One, and Mockingjay Part Two, will direct the adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel.

“Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow’s life. As the austere and vindictive face of the games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus’s fate. I’m thrilled that Peter will be bringing him to life,” said Lawrence.

Viola Davis has joined Lionsgate’s Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Davis will play Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the head gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games. She joins Tom Blyth, who will play the young Coriolanus Snow, and Rachel Zegler, who plays tribute Lucy Gray Baird from the impoverished District 12. Other announced stars include Josh Andrés Rivera, Peter Dinklage, and Hunter Schafer.

The prequel’s synopsis reads: “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.
