Re: Best Depiction of a Fictional Sport in a Movie ?

Are there any real-life sports with a "catch the snitch" equivalent? E.g. a HUGE score for pulling off a tricky and unlikely move? Like in football, a 2 point conversion is pretty rare...yet it's only one more point than just kicking it in.

Seems to me that the winning strategy in quidditch is to ignore normal scoring (aside from defense) and focus exclusively on catching the snitch.

Because the other teams chasers were demonstrably better; the gap was only going to get wider. Catching the snitch ends the game on your own terms. It isn't relevant in the Krum example (World Cup final), but in league play margin of victory or loss is factored in the standings. In some of Harry's years, Gryffindor didn't win every match, but they still won the cup because of overall margin of victory.

That’s what I thought after seeing the movies for the first time. If quidditch was a real sport I have no doubt some Bill Belichick type coach would ruin the spirit of the game by focusing solely on catching the golden snitch. Probably draft some “enforcer” type player to do nothing but chase the snitch the whole time. Eventually quidditch would be nothing but a select few dedicated players chasing the snitch for the win.

The NQL would definitely have to make some rule changes before the league even kicks off.

I think only the seeker can catch the golden snitch

Look, it hit me at the right time, okay? We even saw it in the theater. Then we were out the VHS tape in college. I watched it a few months ago for the heck of it and it still holds up for me, Dude.

MTVs modified basketball celebrity contest Rock n Jock had a 25 point and then a 50 point basket. I can't remember if anyone ever scored on it but I remember plenty of people futilely trying.

The Hunger Games. That played out pretty realistically with the whole volunteer as tribute, gifts to athletes during the game and set for life if you win scenario.

Also while not sport Michael Douglas in "The Game" was pretty intense and you could almost envision a rich boy version of that existing.

The Hunger Games and Running Man aren’t sports. They’re like punishment game shows.

I seem to remember that now. Imagine if that was introduced in the NBA? It would be the focus of the sport.

Why aren't they sports? They have rules, challenges, athletics, and a winner. Heck, The Running Man even had a pregame show and cheerleaders.

Can't they be both?

To be a sport, players have to participate voluntarily, not by force. You wouldn't call gladiatorial combat in Ancient Rome a sport, would you?

Take out the flying, which we obviously can't do, then you'd have a bunch of people running with a stick trying to get a ball past a goalie into a net.

Otherwise known as Lacrosse.

Everyone can get the F out of here with the Baseketball hate.
