What's so confusing about that?

Meh, Cannes is good for 2 things. Crowds walking out halfway through showings and crowds giving 10 minute standing ovations. Both of which mean nothing to the actual quality of the film.

Maybe, but I’m guessing Parasite is better than Hollywood.

You're missing the most important part of that quote:

"Joon-ho's dark comedy [Parasite], which premiered the same night as Once Upon a Time, has drawn raves, including at the Cannes closing ceremony, where the audience stood up and screamed when it was named the Palme d'Or winner."

With 21 films competing for 7 awards, lots of 'em get shut out.

Exactly. Plenty of films have gotten standing ovations. For OUATIH, the crowd was probably simply entertained - in the same way audiences are entertained when watching Fast/Furious movies.

The Dardenne's continue to clean up at Cannes.
And tying the Dardenne's back to the earlier point:
"'Two Days, One Night' was his first film that left the festival empty-handed, despite receiving unanimous acclaim and a 15-minute standing ovation."

So expect a killer BD release from Plain Archive (South Korean) import).

You completely misquoted the article. The original quote is regarding Bong Joo-ho's film Parasite, not Tarantino's.

Joon-ho's dark comedy, which premiered the same night as Once Upon a Time, has drawn raves, including at the Cannes closing ceremony, where the audience stood up and screamed when it was named the Palme d'Or winner.

Checking the list of recent Palm d'Or winners, there are a LOT that I have never heard of before - including the four most recent winners before Shoplifters last year.
Last Palm d'Or winner to win a single Oscar? The Pianist in 2002.

You should see I, Daniel Blake immediately. I didn’t care much for The Square. That directors previous film, Force Majeure (which is getting a US remake) was much better, IMO. I’ve been meaning to see Dheepan or pick up the Criterion disc for a while now, as I like Audiard’s other films. Maybe I’ll get to that now with the Criterion Channel.

Amour won best Foreign Language Movie in 2012.

The Square was lame but Shoplifters was solid.

Very interested in many of the films shown at Cannes...Parasite & The Lighthouse being at the top of the list.

I'm very happy for Bong Joon-ho, one of my favorite directors. Can't wait to see "Parasite". In the meantime, I'm probably going to re-watch "Memories of Murder" and "Mother". Heck, and one of my guilty pleasures as well, "The Host".

Not that anyone cares, aside from this year's winner and Fahrenheit 911, I've seen all the winners going back through 1982.

I'm a huge Audiard fan and Dheepan is incredible, FWIW.

Yup, I missed that one. Just remembered the Best Actress and Best Picture nominations for that film. Very strong movie, albeit depressing as hell.

I, Daniel Blake is a masterpiece. Stands side by side with any of Loach's filmography.
