Spiral: From the Book of Saw (Saw 9) (2021, D: Bousman) - S: Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson

‘Jigsaw’ Writers Are Currently Working On Next ‘SAW’ [Exclusive]

The games are just beginning.

Last October’s Jigsaw was such a success that it was without surprise that I told you (Jan. 16) that Twisted Pictures would be moving forward on another SAW sequel.

At the time of the writing, a ninth SAW was just a “conversation”, but it’s now actively in development, sources confirm to Bloody Disgusting.

While we’re unsure if the next installment will be a direct followup to Jigsaw or SAW 3D: The Final Chapter, what we do know is that Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row) are currently developing it for Twisted Pictures.

Jigsaw directors Michael and Peter Spierig will not be returning and there is still no director attached.

Re: Saw 9 Being Written

Fuck it, why not?

I stopped watching the Saw movies after 5 or 6 when, IMO, they had gotten so repetitive that they all just started blurring together. But I say go all the way to Saw 10 and then call it quits.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=saw2017.htm

$102M in box office worldwide on a $10M budget.

I would say that was a pretty successful comeback after 7 years off.

The last movie kind of left things open for it to continue. However, they are really stretching it trying to keep Tobin Bell in these movies now.

Sure, that gives them time for a rewrite.

Let’s just hope they time the release just right so it doesn’t get forgotten come Oscar time.

Funny posts.

Is my imagination or would Saw 9 break the all time record for sequels?
Of course, I'm excluding porn...

Tobin Bell better have gotten rich off this series. Most have been dreadful after 3 I think (?). Shocked the last one made money. But people watch bad movies... including me.

He’s probably made more at autograph conventions than from these.

Well for horror there’s thirteen Puppet Master films. Friday the 13th has twelve (counting the 2009 remake and Freddy Vs. Jason. Halloween has eleven including the two Zombie films and the upcoming one. Hellraiser has ten.

Of course beyond horror Bond is up to twenty-five.

And if we look overseas, Zatoichi has had 26 original films, plus two reboots/whatever they are.

I think Godzilla is up to 31 films.

Also I forgot the various sequels (official and unofficial) to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. There’s quite a few depending on what you count.

SAW spinoff from.... Chris Rock (2020, D: Bousman)

Chris Rock and Lionsgate are collaborating on a “Saw” spinoff.

“I’ve been a fan of ‘Saw’ since the first film in 2004,” Rock said. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

The franchise revolves around the fictional character John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer” or “Jigsaw,” who traps victims in situations that test their will to live. Tobin Bell has portrayed Jigsaw in all eight films. The low-cost titles have been highly profitable for Lionsgate, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide. Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Gregg Hoffman produced all the “Saw” movies.

Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, made the announcement on Thursday. The new movie will be released on Oct. 23, 2020.

“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” said Drake. “‘Saw’ is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous ‘Saw’ films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

The pic will be produced by Burg and Koules, and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed “Saw II,” “Saw III” and “Saw IV.” The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Rock and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. The movie will be executive produced by Rock, Daniel Heffner and the original creators of “Saw,” James Wan and Leigh Whannell.

“Chris wants to put his own spin on the ‘Saw’ franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with ’48 Hours,'” said Burg and Koules. “This new ‘Saw’ is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started.”

Rock has won four Emmys and three Grammys as a writer and stand-up. His upcoming projects include Sally Potter’s “Molly,” Netflix’s “Dolemite Is My Name!” and the fourth season of FX’s “Fargo.” His film credits include “Lethal Weapon 4,” the “Madagascar” movies and “Top Five,” in which he starred and directed from his own script.

The original “Saw” cost $1.2 million and marked Wan’s feature film directorial debut. The most recent movie was 2017’s “Jigsaw,” which earned $100 million worldwide.

Darren Lynn Bousman directed some of the best ones in the series. It’s cool to see him back.

Moved up 5 months to May 2020.

That's a gamble by Lionsgate making this a summer release.

They probably have a hole in their schedule and something more Halloween-themed for October. Summer horror usually does respectable business.
