Shrunk (D: Johnston) - S: Josh Gad, Rick Moranis

We have exclusively learned that Walt Disney Pictures is developing a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, with Josh Gad attached to star. Here’s what we know about the reboot, which will be set in the same universe as the original movies.

I have independently confirmed with three sources that Walt Disney Pictures has signed actor Josh Gad to star in a Honey, I Shrunk The Kids reboot/sequel. In the original film, Rick Moranis played a scientist father who accidentally shrinks his teenage son and daughter (alongside some neighborhood kids) to just a quarter of an inch in size. They must then adventure through their backyard to return home while fending off insects and other massive-sized obstacles.

The plan is for the movie to be set about three decades after the 1989 original, with Gad set to play the grown-up version of scientist and inventor Wayne Szalinski’s son, Nick Szalinski. The new movie, which will be titled Shrunk, will be a reboot of the original film, but positioned as a “legecyequel,” which means it will exist in the same world and continue the overall storyline. And yes, Nick Szalinski accidentally shrinks his kids, which kickstarts the story of the film.

In February 2018, it was reported that live-action remakes of several films are in development as exclusive content for Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming streaming service, Disney+, with a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids remake named alongside the possibilities. However, we’re told that this project is aiming for a theatrical release and will not be a Disney+ original. Disney is currently on the lookout for a filmmaker who has nostalgia for the original property. Joe Johnston’s directorial debut became Disney’s highest-grossing live-action film, a record it held for five years. Its success spawned two sequels, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and the direct-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, and spawned a television show that ran from 1997 to 2000.

Josh Gad has a very strong relationship with the Mouse House, having voiced Olaf in the Frozen movies, co-starred as LeFou in the live action Beauty and the Beast movie, and he plays Mulch Diggums in the upcoming film Artemis Fowl. He has a bunch of projects in development at Disney, including a new Muppets TV series titled Muppets Live Another Day for Disney+, and an untitled family comedy pitch that he sold with his writing partner Ryan Dixon.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a fun family adventure film, and in a world where Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is actually good, it’s not hard to imagine Shrunk taking on a similar trajectory. The visual effects for the 1989 film were the top of the line at the time, and were mostly a combination of miniatures and larger-than-life practical sets. It might be interesting to see how far they could push this concept now with the progression of CGI effects. Just look at Marvel’s Ant-Man films as an example of some of the fun tentpole action scenes that could be explored in a modern day reboot. And I like Josh Gad when he’s paired with the right material, and this seems like the exact kind of fun project in which his over-the-top comedy might excel. And of course, there are certainly many ’90s kids who now have kids of their own and might buy a ticket.

If Rick Moranis comes out of retirement for one film, I hope its Ghostbusters and not this.

Meh. Not much interest in this for me even though the original is great. Neither sequel was as good. Gad isn’t my favorite either.

I was wondering how many posts it would be before someone bemoans the use of Josh Gad -- it took 2 replies.

As long as he isn't fucking Q*Bert in this one, I guess the casting is fine.

I thought Blew Up was enjoyable. And a young Keri Russell We Shrunk Ourselves wasn’t good. A typical Disney straight to video sequel. Neither hold a candle to the first.

Actually of the sequels personally I like Honey We Shrunk Ourselves a bit more. Even though it’s a retread of the first.

And it features a pre-sex cult Allison Mack!

I remember seeing that at Epcot. It wasn’t great but I specifically remember the mice running in the dark (complete with puffs of air blowing on the audience) and the giant snake coming at the audience.

I thought it was a lot of fun at the time, and much better than Moonwalker.

I always liked the original a lot. I wonder if there will be some kind of tribute/mention of Marcia Strassman's character in the movie.

Not a huge fan of Gad but I am all for more family movies like this. My kids enjoyed the original one.

re: Shrunk (D: Johnston) - S: Josh Gad, Rick Moranis

“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to helm Disney’s upcoming reboot of the film franchise, “Shrunk,” with Josh Gad in talks to star.

Gad pitched the story idea to Disney earlier this year, and the studio jumped on board the idea of reviving the classic 1989 pic starring Rick Moranis. “Shrunk” will mark the third sequel following the original film, with “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” and direct-to-video “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves” bowing in 1992 and 1997, respectively. Johnston was not involved with either film.

The studio met with other directors but felt bringing Johnston back was a perfect fit for all involved. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing through their Mandeville Films and Television banner, with Todd Rosenberg penning the script.

In the original film, Moranis plays Wayne Szalinski, a scientist and father who accidentally shrinks his teenage son and daughter, along with the two brothers from next door, to just a quarter of an inch in size. When they are thrown out with the trash, the four kids must travel through their backyard to return home while fending off insects, lawnmowers and other obstacles.

In this version, Gad will play Wayne’s grown-up son, who follows in his father’s footsteps by not only becoming a scientist, but also accidentally shrinking his children.

The studio had flirted with the idea of debuting the film on Disney Plus, but Rosenberg’s recent draft elicited enthusiasm from execs. Now, the plan is to release the film theatrically. Sources also add development is still in early stages and a greenlight has not yet been given.

Gad recently returned to voice Olaf in the smash hit “Frozen 2,” which has already grossed $750 million worldwide. He also will appear in Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” bowing in 2020, and can be seen in Hulu’s recent horror comedy “Little Monsters.” He is repped by WME.

Johnston most recently helped out Disney with “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” reshoots, so much so that he earned a co-directing credit on the film. Prior to that, he helped launch the Captain America franchise with “Captain America: The First Avenger.” He is repped by Paradigm.

Sounds great for Disney+ - no need to see in the theater.

The DisInsider has exclusively learned that Honey I Shrunk the Kids star, Rick Moranis is in early talks to come out of retirement to star in the film’s sequel. He would be reprising as Wayne Szalinski, a scientist who accidentally shrinks his and two neighboring kids.

We want to mention again that he is in early talks with the studio, and at this point in time had not signed onto the project as of yet.

My interest level in this just rose a ton if that’s true.

If he turned down Serious Ghostbusters I can't imagine he'd do this one.

Did he turn it down? Or he wasn’t asked? I remember an interview with him where he said people just don’t ask him to do anything anymore. He definitely turned down the other one though.

I applaud Moranis’ reasons for retiring but his kids are grown now. I saw come on out of retirement, Rick. We’ve missed you!

Although, if he’s going to come out of retirement for one movie, I don’t really want this to be it.

Yeah, I agree with this. I mean maybe after he retired he just fell out of acting, but his kids are grown now and it would be nice if he’d get back into it a bit.
