Loqueesha (2019) -ummm...

A movie of the moment, Loqueesha offers a comical take on our current socio-political climate while exploring the enduring question of who we are. When Joe (Jeremy Saville), an astute Detroit bartender, finds out he needs to pay for his gifted son’s private school education, he submits an audition to a local radio station for his own talk therapy show. After he’s rejected, he invents a larger-than-life black female personality named Loqueesha, who is hired sight unseen by the unwitting radio station owners. As Loqueesha’s star rises, Joe is increasingly challenged with keeping her identity a secret, maintaining his own sense of self and grappling with the often bizarre perceptions of an audience who have absolutely no idea who they’re talking to.

800 movies get a domestic theatrical release a year, not every one needs a thread *cough*

Is it a real film? Have heard it is, but there are some that still believe this is fake

Re: Loqueesha (2019) -ummm...

I guess I sort of buy the premise. I’ve seen similar plots in movies before but what I can’t buy is that “Loqueesha” sounds exactly like a guy. No one would think that’s an actually woman whether they can see her or not. The voice he uses sounds exactly like a white dude doing a embarrassing imitation of a black woman. Maybe that’s the point but it doesn’t fit with the narrative the trailer is trying to tell.

The IMDB trivia for this is a hoot:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7620554...ef_=tt_trv_trv

Check often because they are removing the gems almost as fast as people are adding them.

This could work...it all depends on the writing.

For naysayers, consider this:
A black guy gets a radio show pretending to be a larger-than-life white female personality named Linda.

What, no outrage?

Even though "Loqueesha/Laqueesha" is a real name, it's also a type of name used to negatively stereotype black women. I'm assuming that the name "Loqueesha" is supposed to be funny in of itself, which comes across as racially insensitive at best. Maybe instead of "Linda", they used "Becky" that would be in the direction of comparability, but there's still no long history of film and television where they exclusively stereotype whites while simultaneously discriminating against them.

And how does a larger-than-life white woman sound that could be much different from a black woman? If anything, that scenario you describe sounds more like Tootsie or Mrs. Doubtfire, and less like Loqueesha or Soulman.

On it's own, the trailer doesn't look mean spirited. There's lots of comedies that deal with the main character impersonating another race/gender/whatever for laughs. Whoopie Goldberg did one where she pretended to be a white, Marlon Brando-esque looking corporate guy. White Girls, Juwanna Man, Little Man, Tootsie, etc. But holy crap, I can't imagine who would green light this thing in 2019. They got shit for Soul Man, and that was back in the 80s.

It could be a "passing" story: A scary Black man passes as white and gets the benefits that only white people deserve. He would be unmasked at the end and be punished by the universe for being uppity. But that wouldn't be funny.

I just read the Roger Ebert review of Soul Man. He said the movie could have been good if it had addressed the issues it raised, rather than taking the easy way out with dumb jokes. It looks like Loqueesha was even easier to make, because the white guy is only Black on the radio. He never has to deal with suspicious stares from the store clerks.

"In order to better understand what it's like to be a black woman, Jeremy Saville paid himself less money than the rest of the people who worked on the film."

Also, the genre is listed as both Comedy and Horror.

Jeremy Saville posted a picture on Instagram of himself and Marlon Wayans, with text that compared his movie to White Chicks by the Wayans brothers, giving the impression that he has Marlon's support.

Marlon Wayans slapped him down.

This guy related to Jimmy? He has quickly become almost as hated, but doesn't have the luxury of being dead.

That's not right for Saville to do that. Saville's film is already catching some backlash, and he's willing to jeopardize Marlon Wayans' brand and reputation by making it look like Wayans approves of Loqueesha.
