Ugh, shit. I really like his movies, even the lesser known ones. I hope he'll recover. I was hoping we'd see more movies from him. He hasn't done one in years, mostly television.

Damn. A stroke at 51. I’m 10 years younger and had a SVT last month. Scary times.

One report was saying it was mild and he checked himself in after he experienced weakness following a flight from Costa Rica. Hope he's alright

Hope he recovers. It would be a shame if he went out like this.

While I haven't seen anything he's directed, I hope he can make a full recovery. We're both the same age. Scary stuff.

You never saw Boyz in the Hood, Shaft, Hustle and Flow, Rosewood, or 2 Fast 2 Furious?

John Singleton is currently in a coma after suffering a "major stroke," his mother has written in an application for temporary conservatorship.

Hopefully it's just mild, whatever that means regarding strokes.
He always seems healthy and energetic in interviews.

I'm not a big fan of his movies, but I enjoyed Poetic Justice, and it's probably the second best performance from Tupac Shakur. The film is very '90s in a good way.

Sad news. I hope he can pull through this. :(

I grew up in a mostly white middle class neighborhood in Colorado so I wasn’t in much danger of joining an L.A. street gang but Boyz in the Hood scared me enough to walk the straight and narrow as a teenager. I avoided those kinds of negative influences because of that movie. It probably had more of an influence over me than all of my school counselors and after school specials combined.

It’s a pretty sobering damn movie!

John Singleton's stroke triggered what appears to be a family war over his condition and care, because one of John's daughters has just effectively called John's mother a liar.

Cleopatra Singleton claims in new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, that her dad is NOT in a coma and claims he's getting better everyday . This is in stark contrast to the legal docs filed just yesterday by John's mom, Shelia, who claimed he was in a coma and had suffered a "major stroke."

We broke the story, Shelia wanted to establish a conservatorship to handle John's business dealings while he lay incapacitated.

Cleopatra says Shelia is up to no good, claiming she's abused her position as John's personal and business manager, especially when it came to supporting his 4 children. Cleopatra, a college sophomore, says in the docs that Shelia has stated her intention to liquidate John's assets and leave his kids with nothing.

Cleopatra attacks Shelia, saying, "My father's allowed his mother to stay in that position out of fear and obligation to her as she's bullied and abandoned my father since he was a small child, leaving him emotionally defenseless."

John suffered a stroke last week as he was being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. as a patient for a problem with his leg.

Cleopatra says her father is breathing on his own but is in a medically sedated state. She says he responds to stimuli and has even smiled on many occasions. She adds, doctors have told her John could be out of ICU in 5 days.

Boyz n the Hood resonated with me and taught me a lot about fighting with others. It probably kept me out of a lot of trouble and away from creating bad relationships. I’m not sure I received that teaching anywhere else.

This is odd. A local film critic says a family member of Singleton's told him he passed this morning. Haven't seen any other confirmation.

Per TMZ:

John Singleton is still alive, contrary to reports Monday morning, but it does not look good.

John's publicist tells us the famed director is alive and on life support at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. We're told John is still in a medically-induced coma and is non-responsive and not getting better.

TMZ broke the story ... John suffered a stroke at Cedars 12 days ago ... this after checking himself into the hospital because of pain in one of his legs.

The "Boyz n the Hood" director has not responded to treatment and his condition is dire ... after what his mother, Shelia Ward, characterized as a major stroke.

In the middle of all of this, there's a family war over control of John's estate. Shelia has asked a judge to appoint her temporary conservator to handle his business affairs, while one of his daughters, Cleopatra, is trying to block the conservatorship, claiming Shelia is trying to fleece the estate and freeze out his 4 children.

Well, the local news station, where the movie critic works, just posted this on Facebook

The family of director John Singleton told FOX4 film critic Shawn Edwards early Monday that Singleton has died, however, Singleton's representatives say he is still in a medically induced coma.

Apparently they're taking him off life support today. Man that's weird, a little leg pain and you're dead.

re: John Singleton, Oscar-Nominated Director, Hospitalized After Suffering A Stroke [Update: Dead at 51]

10:10 AM PT -- John's family just released this ... "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John's doctors."

The family's statement also reveals John "quietly struggled with hypertensions. More than 40% of African-American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe."

John's family encouraged his fans to recognize symptoms and visit heart.org for more information.
