News of the World (2020, D: Greengrass) S: Tom Hanks

EXCLUSIVE: In the first project that has come unglued from Fox since the Disney acquisition, Universal Pictures has picked up rights to The News of The World, an adaptation of the Paulette Jiles novel that is re-teaming Captain Phillips’ director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks.

Scripted by Lion’s Luke Davies, the novel is set in 1870, revolving around a road trip through the untamed West taken by unlikely traveling partners. On the one hand is Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Texan who travels from town to town to read the news to locals who would otherwise not know what is going on in the world. While Kidd’s idea of excitement is spreading the word of the passage of the 15th Amendment that gave voting rights to all men, he gets a jolt when he agrees to escort a 10-year-old white girl to her aunt and uncle in San Antonio after she was rescued from the Kiowa Indian tribe that kidnapped her and killed her family four years earlier. His traveling partner is an ornery youngster who didn’t want to be rescued and brought to her relatives. Together they face the inhospitable frontier.

Playtone’s Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing with Pretty Pictures’ Gail Mutrux and Gregory Goodman, latter of whom teamed with Greengrass on 22 July and Jason Bourne. Playtone has a long relationship with Fox 2000 and Elizabeth Gabler, and Hanks and Goetzman set up the picture with her label in May, 2017.

Gabler was surprised to learn that there won’t be a place for her or her Fox 2000 label at Disney, in a development that was a shocker to the town and every filmmaker who has a project there. This is the first project to come unglued and find a new home.

It was an easy move for Playtone, which collaborated with Universal on the Mamma Mia! movies and other films. Hanks will next appear in Toy Story 4 and It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a film about the beloved and iconic children’s television host Fred Rogers.

Greengrass returns to Universal where his credits include multiple Jason Bourne movies, as well as Green Zone and United 93, for which he scored an Oscar nomination. He most recently directed the Netflix drama 22 July.

Hanks and Greengrass are represented by CAA

News of the World - In Theaters Christmas

This Christmas, Universal Pictures is proud to present Tom Hanks starring in News of the World, a moving story written and directed by Paul Greengrass, reuniting for the first time with his star from their 2013 Best Picture nominee Captain Phillips.

Five years after the end of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), a widower and veteran of three wars, now moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news of presidents and queens, glorious feuds, devastating catastrophes, and gripping adventures from the far reaches of the globe.

In the plains of Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna (Helena Zengel, System Crasher), a 10-year-old taken in by the Kiowa people six years earlier and raised as one of their own. Johanna, hostile to a world she’s never experienced, is being returned to her biological aunt and uncle against her will.

Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces as they search for a place that either can call home.

News of the World is directed by Greengrass (the Bourne films, United 93) from his screenplay with Luke Davies (Lion), based on the National Book Award finalist and best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles. The film is produced by Gary Goetzman (Mamma Mia! franchise, Greyhound), Gail Mutrux (The Danish Girl, Donnie Brasco) and Gregory Goodman (22 July, 8 Mile). The executive producers are Steven Shareshian and Tore Schmidt. The film’s music is by eight-time Academy Award® nominee James Newton Howard.

I enjoyed this quite a bit, gave it a strong B. Nice to actually go to a theater these days. I haven't read the book, but it made me want to. A couple of the events in the middle of the film seem half-baked, too quick, but the overall journey and the emotional beats are very strong. The acting is top-notch, as expected from Hanks, but also from the kid, who is mesmerizing.

Watched this tonight and LOVED IT. Hanks was great as usual, but Helena Zengel was magnificent. The cinematography was also quite stunning at times. I just wish Greengrass could have put that shaky cam aside for this one. I give the film a 9/10 rating.

Just got back from the theater (I can't even remember the last movie I saw in theaters) and we really enjoyed it. I was surprised at the runtime as it seemed to move so quickly. Beautifully shot, and I'm glad we decided to see it on the big screen. I'm so glad they went with authentic rather than a more modern aesthetic of a "clean" western (where everyone seems to have access to showers and looks well kept) even down to low light indoors and by campfire. It's just something that takes me right out of a film set in this period.

Quite simply and without hesitation, one of the best westerns of the 21st century and dare i say one of at least the top 100 of all-time. and i love a great western.

riveting, absolutely riveting from beginning to end. such a glorious movie. moving, some action, but at it's heart, simply a basic man, who used to be a preacher, with some survival skills and the expertise to read the local and not so local news that comes into his possession with the ability to entrance, amuse and even, perhaps, start a revolution and a girl, ravaged somewhat by life, traveling the wild west in 1870.

Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel (who played little Johanna) were incredible. the slowly building relationship with an almost mute little girl (who you know has been through a lot in her short years) and former Captain in the Civil War was palpable. warm, tender, but not all of a sudden, it builds and builds marvelously to the ultimately gentle and heartfelt conclusion. my god did i shed a tear or two.

just an incredible, beautifully shot, with gorgeous cinematography, ride that you just don't know what will come or how it will end, but getting there is a magnificent journey. you feel as the two feel. you are with them and gripped, at least i was, for the entirety of the film.

just wonderful and one that will most certainly be in my Blu-ray collection when it is released.

We agree on recent movies. This and "Promising Young Woman" are two of 2020's best. "News of the World" is the best Western I've seen since "Open Range".

both are definitely 2 of the best this year. they will both be nominated for Best Picture, actor (Tom Hanks), actress (Mulligan, maybe Zengel), but i fear Nomadland will take most of the prizes, but oh well. still amazing entertainment in these 2.

I also enjoyed "Nomadland" a great deal. And McDormand did a fine job. But I don't want her to win this year. It really should go to Mulligan. Sadly, Diane Lane isn't even being mentioned and I personally feel she gave the best performance by an Actress in 2020 in "Let Him Go". Which I also think is the best movie of the year.

Great perfomances by Tom Hanks and Helene Zengel (in System Crasher she is even better) in a very good western, with a lot of heart. I liked Tom Hanks in Greyhound as well, but News of the World is the better movie by far.

she was great in Let Him Go, as was the movie. you never know though. might be slim pickings and she could sneak in, at least as a nominee.

i also loved seeing Bill Camp in NotW for a very quick bit who was really great as Mr. Shaibel in The Queen's Gambit.

Wait, Bill Camp was in "Let Him Go"!? How did I miss that? Must have been a quick and uncredited part. I don't see him on IMDB. That guy is in everything. I just saw him in "Wildlife". Another film that I'm stunned didn't get a single Oscar nomination.

No, he was in News of the World. My bad. Didn’t make it clear. I edited. Played Willie when Kidd goes back home to find his wife. Very blink and you could miss him moment.

Ahhhh, yes. Again, he's a remarkable character actor. With a great agent.

I didn't take notice of Bill Camp until I saw him in The Night Of. From there on out I am happy whenever he pops up in a movie or show.

I've watched the movie a second time and it's just wonderful. Although there a no suprises in the story, the developing frindship between the two characters is heartwarming and well acted.

I also watched Helena Zengel in System Crasher, the reason why Greengrass casted her, without having other auditions. A fantastic movie as well, but not an easy watch.

Watched News of the World this weekend and really enjoyed it as well. Just a well made, entertaining film. Very old fashioned big-budget Hollywood prestige film. Kind of surprised it didn't pick up a few more Oscar nominations. I did think the Oscar-nominated score was fantastic.

I thought the movie was exquisite in the quiet moments. Honestly the parts I didn't really care all that much for were when "things were happening". I didn't think that worked as well.

Enjoyed this quite a bit. Tom Hanks is just so good in everything. Maybe the most likeable actor and guy in the world at this point.

He's also really smart in his choices. Sure he probably gets to see every script with a good part for a white man in his sixties, but he rarely picks roles that aren't interesting or screenplays that aren't well written.
