The Menu (2022, D: Mylod) S: Taylor-Joy, Fiennes, Hoult, McTeer, Leguizamo, Chau, Light
EXCLUSIVE: The hot project du jour: The Menu, a dark satirical comedy that Alexander Payne will direct. So far, Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes have signed on to star, and it’s anticipated that other swell names will enlist.
Scripted by Will Tracy & Beth Reiss, the pic focuses on an eccentric culinary event that is planned for an exclusive island and becomes the hot ticket to die for. I’ve heard it referred to as a Tarantino-esque take on The One-Percent. Fiennes plays the world-class chef who sets it all up and adds some unexpected ingredients to the menu planned. The action follows one particular A-list couple that takes part. I’ve heard Stone will play half of that couple.
The picture is produced by Gary Sanchez, who have a first look at Paramount. I reported Saturday that Gary Sanchez principals Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are splitting, but that script is into Paramount now, and that studio has a week or so to furnish a proposal. After that, Gary Sanchez can shop the project wide. Like Payne’s great films The Descendants and Nebraska, the budget here is smallish but there will be profit participation as part of the package. First step is to see if Paramount steps up, after which it will be a free for all, based on the buzz I am hearing.
Stone is WME and Anonymous Content, Fiennes and Payne are CAA.

Sounds interesting.
I’m not a huge fan of Payne’s work but I did enjoy Election and The Descendants. I’ll probably give this a shot if the reviews are good.

I don’t hate Sideways but after all the hype, top critics lists, awards, etc. it felt really overrated by the time I finally saw it. Critics were basically fellating themselves while watching it. The story felt bland to me but I’m a fan of Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church so they saved it for me.

This is moving forward, but Payne and Stone are out.

Emmy and Tony Award winner John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge, Critical Thinking) is in final talks to join Searchlight’s The Menu from producers Adam McKay and Betsy Koch.
The film, directed by Mark Mylod, is a darkly comedic psychological thriller set in the world of eccentric culinary culture, centering on a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu.
Previously announced cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, who will portray one-half of the young couple; Ralph Fiennes, who stars as the chef; as well as Nicholas Hoult and Hong Chau in unconfirmed roles.

Interesting. Mylod is best known for doing most of the Succession episodes as well as some of the best Game of Thrones (Battle of the Bastards, The Winds of Winter).
This will be his first feature film.

I guess the trailer for this isn't online yet... I saw it play in theatres before Men. It looks wild.

A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Ralph Fiennes, John Leguizamo, Judith Light, Hong Chau

“Hoity-toity rich people getting a grisly comeuppance” is slowly becoming its own genre of films.

The moment I read a quick synopsis of what the film is about on this thread I said to myself, "It's people!." Lol. From the trailer it looks like the rich are enjoying what they unwittingly do not realize is their last meal before they are hunted down. I guess this is a case of a member of the 1% class being the hunted instead of the poor schlubs who usually get picked in The Most Dangerous game type films.
I also take it that when he says to the girlfriend/wife(?) of the Nicholas Hoult character that she does not belong there that he is warning her that something ominous is about to happen to most guests on the Island and he sees no reason why she should be one of the poor unfortunate souls who get their comeuppance in this film.
If this movie is not filled with gore I might give it a shot when it comes to home video/cable/streaming.

This was really good. I recommend catching it in a cinema if you can. It has a few twists and turns, but nothing too surprising, though it was definitely not quite about what I thought it was about from the trailers.
Hong Chau steals every moment she's on screen.

I also quite enjoyed this. It's a bit of slow burn for the first half, but the witty satire of the vacuous upper class diners, the anticipation of something sinister about to be revealed, and the spot-on performances by Fiennes, Taylor-Joy, Chau and Hoult made this a consistently compelling watch. Oh yeah, and the food looked yummy, especially the burger. I want one of those. NOW!
My one major gripe with the storyline was:
Overall, an entertaining mixture of horror, suspense and satire that kind of deftly balances all three in a fairly impressive manner.

I enjoyed this, I laughed out aloud quite a bit, a rarity for me as I find most horror jokes to be weak. Great cast. Although for a movie, none of the customers came across as awful people. The movie actually has you rooting for them.
I was a little disappointed when there was no payoff to
