Re: Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023, D: Sandberg) - News, rumors
I think this movie will do well, but only because the general movie going public is likely not aware of the state of DC film universe. For the rest of us, it seems the general consensus ranges from "meh" to "what's the point".
I was at the theater over the weekend and saw a poster for this, The Flash, and Blue Beetle. The Flash is really the only one that imo has any chance at making an impact on current/future DC films. I'd expect Shazam to come and go without much fanfare, and wtf even is Blue Beetle? Feels like I've seen/heard next to nothing about that one beyond the poster.

I have no idea what’s even happening with Blue Beetle. I’ve barely seen any information about it aside from the logo.

I tend to believe the reviews that say the last act is a mess or too long. Very few films in this genre get that right.

Wow, reading lots of posts in DC groups with folks saying they aren't going to bother with this movie because "it doesn't matter" with the upcoming reboot. Between that and folks not liking Black Adam and letting that sour them on Shazam....Sigh...

That's too bad. Even though I am in the "it doesn't matter" camp, that didn't stop the first film from being fun. Even movies that exist in a interconnected universe needn't necessarily advance the overall "global" arc. I'm fine with guys like Shazam having fun on their own. They can simply cameo in the big event picture, or not show up at all. This isn't like Marvel where most everyone lives in New York (and even they manage to have independent adventures).

I kinda get it for something like Aquaman but that's pretty petty for Shazam. The first movie had next to nothing to do with the Snyderverse. If this did okay, they might keep Levi/Shazam around for the Gunnverse.

Shazam 2 is tracking poorly at $35-40M for opening weekend.
It's got some stiff competition as it's facing John Wick 4 week 2 and Dungeons and Dragons week 3. I think it has an uphill battle to even equal the 1st movie's WW box office.

I'm a big fan of the original Captain Marvel comics and rather liked the first movie despite some faults, but even I'm not particularly excited to go see this in the cinema. The trailers aren't doing much for me and I'm tired of Zachary Levi's wide-eyed idiot portrayal of Shazam, Captain Thunder, whatever we're supposed to call the actual superhero - that act kind of wore thin by the end of the first movie. Whatever happened to the wisdom of Solomon, anyway?

I kinda of wish they didn't adapt Geoff John's story and the Shazam family was just the three main heroes, because it does seem a bit like overkill to have all these heroes, but I do love Shazam and my kids are excited to watch it.
Well that plus Asher Angel is already looking a little old for a traditional Billy Batson so even if they go forward with this we can get maybe one more movie before you kind of just have to forget about showing his alter ego. Even in the first movie Levi seemed way more childish than Asher was which makes no sense.

I'm gonna watch it because I have to try these DCU movies. But they're pretty much dead to me. The Snyder Cut was still awesome. But they're abandoning ship. Whatever.

Reviews are coming out. Surprised at some of the complaints geared toward Levy's performance.

I may end up skipping this one. I really didn’t care for the first movie and a lot of the reviews, even the “Fresh” ones, are saying it’s not as good as the first. That doesn’t bode well for me.

L.A. critic Christy Lemire (Breakfast All Day, rogerebert.com) posted a quick review after just leaving the theater. She thought it was better than the first.
