The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland
Drive Me Crazy
Mystery, Alaska
Three Kings
Three Kings was the big one this week, I remember being so excited for it. It may have one of the best opening acts I've ever seen, kinetic to the max. I've always had a soft spot for Mystery, Alaska, well written and fun. I don't remember a thing about Drive Me Crazy. Elmo is Elmo.

Three Kings was the first DVD I picked up when I bought my first DVD player. I had just graduated college, moved to a new city, and didn't have any way to watch movies. I was going to get a VCR, but opted for the DVD instead. I don't know why I picked up Three Kings, I certainly hadn't seen anything about it, but I enjoyed it greatly.

Now we’re getting into it.
Three Kings kicked off a fall of outstanding movies. I was 21 years old, in college, in LA, and I watched a ton of movies.
Three Kings is amazing. Tons of fun. I love the multiple film stocks look. I remember the DVD had a warning put on it to not adjust your tv, the film was supposed to look like that. Today it’s so common.
I’ll share this now since I have the time.
USC film school has had a course called Cinema 466 for decades. It was started by Charles Champlin in the 1980s. It’s Thursday nights at 6:00 pm. It was later hosted by Leonard Maltin. Each week is a new film that HASN’T come out yet accompanied by someone who was part of making the film.
My then girlfriend, now wife, took the class in Fall 1999. Boy what a lucky lady. And lucky me I was able to sneak into to most of the screenings.
They had some duds, like an Alison Anders film, but this may have been the greatest session of that class ever. First night of class was American Beauty with Annette Benning there. Later on they had Toy Story 2 with Lassiter there. And Fight Club with Edward Norton speaking afterwards.
Those are the highlights. I’ll try to remember some others.
Edit: The course was created and hosted by critic Arthur Knight.

Three Kings is great. One of my favorites from the 90s. Up to that point in didn’t care for Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube or Spike Jonze. I still don’t care much for Jonze (acting or directing) but he is at least tolerable in TK and Wahlberg has become one of my favorite actors. Ice Cube is very good when he sticks to more dramatic movies.
Mystery, Alaska is fun. There are certainly worse ways to kill 2 hours.

Yeah, that does sound like a cool class. Best I ever got at my community college film class was the guy who played the porn clerk in Ghost World. True story.
ETA: And believe it or not, Annette Bening actually took drama classes at that community college!

Random Hearts
Superstar
Random Hearts was the beginning stages of Harrison Ford's career downturn, I'm shocked he didn't end up in the direct to video hell that Bruce Willis did. I never liked Superstar, just didn't find the character funny and the idea that she worked at a video store and would watch movies backwards because she had to rewind them just annoyed me.

^ Yeah, two not very good movies.
That Superstar character was annoying as shit in a 6 minute SNL skit. Over an hour and a half it is just brutal.

Fight Club
The Omega Code
The Story of Us
The Straight Story
The Omega Code seemed to be the start of the religious movies using churches to drive box office, did decently. The Story of Us did absolutely nothing for me or the general audience. The Straight Story was a great change of pace for David Lynch. Then there's that Fight Club movie...

That is one of the most laboriously drawn out trailers I’ve ever seen. Felt longer than the movie.

Bats
The Best Man
Boy's Don't Cry
Bringing Out the Dead
Crazy in Alabama
Three to Tango
I never thought Bringing Out the Dead got the appreciation it deserved, love the energy of that movie. Boy's Don't Cry was great, but I didn't have any interest in revisiting it over the past 20 years, maybe I will now. Always loved The Best Man, been meaning to watch the sequel that was made a few years ago. Crazy in Alabama wasn't bad, just very forgettable. Three to Tango is blah and Bats was trash.

There are elements I really like about all of the "stories" within the film, and I still quote some of Ving Rhames' lines to this day, but the film isn't very cohesive as a whole.

Between After Hours and Bringing out the Dead, I think Scorsese does a great job with overnight, insomnia, type flicks.
i agree with printerati though, BotD doesn’t have the most cohesive story.

It's been quite a while since I've seen Bringing Out the Dead, but I recall liking it quite a bit. I was doing a lot of boozing at that point, so either I didn't notice the disjointedness, or I found that to be part of why I liked it.

Re: It Was 20 Years Ago Today... (1999 Nostalgia)
Bringing Out the Dead was the last new movie I bought on VHS.
The movie is certainly episodic, but I don't consider it disjointed. It has a very clear structure, of Frank working three nights with three different partners who each have their own way of dealing with the emotional labour of the job.
I like that it and Goodfellas bookends the 90's for Scorsese, a decade where he made six diverse movies (well, not counting Casino/Goodfellas), all of them excellent.

House on Haunted Hill
Music of the Heart
House on Haunted Hill was the first movie released by Dark Castle Entertainment, which had a decent run with releasing decently budgeted fun horror flicks. No problems with this one. Music of the Heart was was the latest Wes Craven Halloween time release. I kept waiting for the violins to be cursed and kids to die, but instead it was a forgettable Meryl Streep drama that of course ended in a Best Actress nomination.

House on Haunted Hill was one of those late 90s-early 2000s horror movies with a lot of potential that just turned out bad. It also has one of the funniest Deus ex machinas I’ve ever seen in a Hollywood movie.

Re: It Was 20 Years Ago Today... (1999 Nostalgia)
Yeah, I liked many parts of the first half of the movie, but thought the ending was terrible. I thought having the house give the two survivors all the cheques really cheapened the movie. It was like the filmmakers didn't believe the two characters escaping with their lives was powerful enough, and thought a cash jackpot would make things exciting for the audience. Blah.
