That's one of several great gags in the film, but the scene with Steve Martin assembling "the best damn crew we can afford" remains my favorite.

Holy cow, what a weekend to go to the movies. The Iron Giant is a certified classic, shame it bombed but at least Brad Bird's career wasn't hurt. The Sixth Sense was a great experience the first time, the movie plays very different on subsequent viewings. Thomas Crown is the type of movie that doesn't get released to theaters anymore, it's a shame.
  • I thought the Iron Giant was mawkish Spielberg sentimentality. (I hate E.T.)
  • Mystery Men didn't do anything for me.
  • I was dumbfounded by the twist in The Sixth Sense, but my date figured it out halfway through the movie and she was just waiting for it to play out. I'm glad I saw it in the theater and didn't know The Secret.
  • The Thomas Crown Affair kept destroying my willing suspension of disbelief (a pencil in the track? a sprinkler system?) and I got frustrated. I watched part of it again a few months ago on TV, and it was still insulting to my intelligence.

I'm not sure if this is a underrated movie but to me it's a classic. It just hits every comedic beat and is infinitely re-playable.

I prefer the one the Ringer did. Seems much more in line with general consensus and has Fight Club ranked MUCH higher.

Thomas Crown Affair was Image Entertainment’s very last laserdisc.

Mickey Blue Eyes
Teaching Mrs. Tingle
Universal Soldier: The Return

Mickey Blue Eyes was a forgettable romantic comedy with one memorable gag involving fake blood packets. Teaching Mrs. Tingle was a tad infamous due to the subject matter and original title in the aftermath of Columbine. It came out and nobody cared because the movie sucked. I don't remember a thing about Universal Soldier: The Return.

^I thought Idle Hands came out before Teaching Mrs. Tingle. That was another "Violent" movie that people were ordered to ignore in the wake of Columbine.

In the end didn’t they make a movie about busting up fake purse counterfeiters? Or am I thinking of something else.

I labeled it as Universal Soldier: The Sequel Nobody Asked For.

Mickey Blue Eyes was Warner’s last US laserdisc release (might’ve streeted same day as Wild Wild West.)

No, they made a film about aliens titled Chubby Rain. I'm not sure what film you're thinking of.

No, I googled it. It was the film they made at the end.

In Too Deep

Only saw this once, only remember the pool stick scene. Never wanted to revisit it.

The 13th Warrior
The Astronaut's Wife
Dudley Do-Right
The Muse

Talk about being in the dead of summer, none of these are that good. The 13th Warrior is the best of the bunch by a long shot, really wish we could see the original cut.

Thought The Muse was alright. Easily the worst-tier of Albert Brooks films but still not too bad.

Coming off of Mother, I was extremely disappointed.

The original title of The 13th Warrior was Eaters of the Dead (I have a teaser for it.) Considering it isn’t a horror movie, changing that title was a good idea. (There was also a Vietnam war movie called The Walking Dead, which nobody saw.)

That’s the title of the Michael Crichton book it’s based on.

At the end of the summer I was just counting down the days until Fight Club was released and that wasn't until October.

I always dug 13th Warrior. I hate The Astronaut's Wife, which is basically a remake of Rosemary's Baby, but with a sci-fi edge. One of the worst films of 1999.

Re: It Was 20 Years Ago Today... (1999 Nostalgia)

I saw 13th Warrior at the first matinee on opening day and was amazed at how pristine the film print was. Seems like it only took a couple screenings before scratches and dust marks start showing up, so I don't think I'd ever seen a movie projected so cleanly before. That's all I remember about the movie lol

As I recall, both "13th Warrior" and "Astronaut's Wife" came in with a cloud hanging over them, -both were delayed and re-edited and dumped in theaters. And, of course, I saw them both in the theater. "Warrior" wasn't all that bad, but I've not seen it again in all these years, and "Wife" was pretty much forgettable.

Probably already mentioned but I remember everyone falling for the Blair Witch Project hype - I loved it and got caught up in it myself.

Chill Factor
Outside Providence

I feel like Chill Factor was the bottom of the barrel for the Speed rip offs, can't remember many more after this. Outside Providence seems to have disappeared, always thought it should've turned into a cult classic, but it never got to that level.

Never saw Outside Providence but I remember the trailer and thinking it looked interesting. Never heard of it again, and forgot all about it until a week ago, when I listened to an appearance by Roger Ebert on the Howard Stern show. During the interview, Howard and Robin were attacking Ebert for giving OP a bad review, saying they loved it, and Ebert insisted it was terrible. Each party thought the other was out of their minds.

Re: It Was 20 Years Ago Today... (1999 Nostalgia)

I think Outside Providence was done a disservice in the marketing. I seem to remember them using the Farrelly Brothers’ names prominently on the advertising, this was right off their success of There’s Something About Mary. When it came out and was a far more serious movie than TSAM, people weren’t interested. Hell, I thought it was a Farrelly bros. movie too until a few minutes ago when I double checked.
