Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Instinct was another forgettable adult drama, the later 90's was filled with them. AP2 was hilarious, yes it repeated a lot of the same jokes as AP1, but it ratcheted them up perfectly.

Instinct was terrible and the only reason I watched it was because of my huge crush on Maura Tierney at that time.

I remember in the trade magazine we got at the video store I worked at, they had a giant ad touting that it made $69,696,696 in the first four days. They leaned hard into naughty humor.

Austin Powers 2 is one of the few sequels I like better than the Original. Myers figured out that Dr Evil stole the original movie, so he bumped up his scenes and I think the Austin Powers scenes are the weak link here. Maybe the addition of Mini-Me was the reason the Dr Evil parts are great in the sequel, and Myers probably never saw it coming how much the public would love that character.

I feel like this was the end of the Disney resurgence that started back in the late 80's. The animated films during that run seemed like classics from conception, they were big and took on classic stories.

This 1999 nostalgia is in full kick now. I am just starting this cool book
It's really good with tons of new interviews with everyone from Fincher and Pitt to Brad Bird to Mike Judge. Highly recommended.

I feel the same way about Tarzan. You can actually feel Disney break during the film. The first 40 minutes are so much better than the second half.
You can tell they were burned out of making Broadway showtune style features, and using non diagetic pop music to get away from that was a brilliant step.

I can't find the exact quote now, but I will always chuckle when I think of when Trey Parker and Matt Stone showed up at the Oscars in J.Lo and a Gwyneth Paltrow dresses and then after "Blame Canada" lost to "You'll Be In My Heart", they said something like "We wouldn't have minded losing to Aimee Mann. She's cool. But man, losing to Phil Collins sucks!". Even as a long-time Phil fan, I had to

I remember that the pre-release description of South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut on IMDB was a flagrant lie. I saw the movie in the theater and then looked it up in IMDB for the credits. The description hadn't been changed yet.

I'm pretty sure that IMDB posted the description that Matt and Trey told them. I'm also pretty sure that Matt and Trey were messing with them.

My theater had a “Box Office Buddy” with cards that outlined movies. I remember the one for South Park saying “The kids are sent to boot camp after stealing their teacher Mr. Garrison’s puppet alter-ego.”
That wasn’t the only time that thing got movies hilariously wrong though.

I really like Disney’s version of Tarzan. It’s got some of the most beautiful hand drawn animation mixed seamlessly with CGI. The Phil Collins music seemed to fit the movie quite nicely as well.
Honestly, the only mistep was the casting of Rosie O’Donnell. I think the movie would have played much better if the gorillas didn’t speak.

The two extended wordless sequences are, by far, my favorites in the movie.
One semi-horrifying, semi-cute thing is that after watching the movie numerous times, my then 3 year old daughter tried to kiss me hard right on the lips like Jane did Tarzan. It was a sweet sentiment, but I explained to her that is not how you kiss daddy or mommy.

June 15, 1999: I went to see THE MUMMY in Times Square at the Astor Plaza, which used to be the best theater (a single screen) at which to see a blockbuster in New York. I had a pass and only paid $1. I remember liking it, up to a point.

The following year Disney released Dinosaur which I had the same complaint about. It would have been a lot better had it had no dialogue. The first 5 minutes or so were wordless and it plays wonderfully, as soon as yet dinos start talking it goes south.

The Mummy is a movie that I’ve come to appreciate over the years. When I first watched it in the theater I remember thinking it was a goofy Indiana Jones knockoff. But as I’ve watched it several more times over the years, I’ve come to accept it for what it is and realize it’s the exact movie the filmmakers were aiming to make. Even the actors knew exactly what they were making and seemed to be having fun doing it. Watching it with that perspective makes me appreciate it for the silly, fun ride that it is.

This part of Roger Ebert's review of The General's Daughter has stuck with me all this time.
The friendly guy is Warrant Officer Paul Brenner, played by John Travolta--first as a slow-talking redneck, and then, after he drops the undercover masquerade, as an aggressive Army cop. He meets Elisabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson) just that once, before her naked corpse is found staked spread-eagled to the ground, having been strangled. And if you blinked at that description of her dead body, well, so did I. The circumstances of the victim's death are so bizarre and unlikely that they derail most of the scenes they involve. "The General's Daughter" is a well-made thriller with a lot of good acting, but the death of Elisabeth Campbell is so unnecessarily graphic and gruesome that by the end I felt sort of unclean. If this had been a documentary, or even a fiction film with serious intentions, I would have accepted it. But does entertainment have to go this far just to shake us up?

Man the post-Pulp Fiction 90s were a weird time for Travolta He got so many leads in big-budget star-driven vehicles and yet so few were good or memorable . The only one that I really liked was Face/Off. Most of the others weren't bad but just forgettable
