Election was a good movie from 1999.

Cider House Rules and Existenz were other good flicks.

I still love Deuce Bigelow but I like the sequel a lot more. I still wish Rob Schneider made a 3rd movie. I saw Election again recently from it being free to watch on Vudu and I liked it a lot more watching it from when I first saw it. Go is still a good movie and I love the soundtrack.

1999 was a very rewatchable year for me. I know I've seen Fight Club, American Beauty, The Matrix, eXistenZ, The Iron Giant, The Green Mile, Titus, Being John Malkovich, Stir of Echoes, The Faculty, Go, American Pie, Election, Man on the Moon, The Mummy, Big Daddy, Bowfinger, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions, Galaxy Quest, Office Space, Three Kings, Toy Story 2, Dogma, The Talented Mr Ripley, Eyes Wide Shut, Mystery Men, The Insider, Blast from the Past, Audition, Lake Placid, Life, House on Haunted Hill, The Straight Story, Payback, South Park, and Ravenous multiple times.That's more than most years put out by a pretty wide margin.

Never did care for Boondock Saints.

Surprised the thread has gotten this far without anyone mentioning The Blair Witch Project. Love it or hate it, it certainly changed the way movies are marketed.

Some of these movies do not feel like they were made 20 years ago while others feel like it's been an eternity.

Just watched Thirteenth Floor for the first time. Was impressed. Crazy that The Matrix and Thirteenth Floor were released within a couple months of each other.

For the record, I'm totally ok with talking about Go, as I love that movie. Probably one of, if not the best Pulp Fiction-inspired films that were so prevalent in the 90s. I really wish I could scrub the movie from my memory and watch it again fresh, as the feeling of dread I had when Todd learns that Ronna is selling drugs at the rave (thinking she was selling drugs she'd stolen from him, not realizing she'd flushed the real drugs and was actually just selling OTC aspirin) was one of the most anxiety-inducing scenes I can recall. I also love Todd drawing a map to Simon's apartment for the gangsters, and even how to avoid construction delays. And as a Miata owner, I still yell (at myself) "It's a MIATA" when I can't fit something in the trunk. Which is most of the time.

Looking over a list of films from 1999, I'm much more of a fan of the ones that weren't blockbusters:

- Snow Falling On Cedars
- Limbo
- Bringing Out The Dead
- The Straight Story
- Drop Dead Gorgeous
- Mumford

That being said, I did (and still do) enjoy The Matrix, The Thirteenth Floor, The Insider, and Being John Malkovich.

There were some great films from overseas, too, many of which I didn't see until a couple of years later:

- The Girl On The Bridge (France)
- Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (Japan)
- The Road Home (China)
- Memento Mori (S. Korea)
- Nowhere To Hide (S. Korea)
- Shiri (S. Korea)

There's a really well-done podcast called Podcast Like It's 1999, where each episode focuses on discussing a different film from 1999. It's done by one of the creators of the Sleepy Hallow TV series, so they often get other writers or actors to discuss favourite films.

The first episode on Eyes Wide Shut is an excellent example. They spent some quality time discussing the implications of the class difference between the characters, which turned out to be a rich layer to the movie I'd never considered before.

How interested you are with each episode may depend on how much you like the film being discussed, but other shows that stand out in my memory as being interesting listens are South Park: Bigger, Longer, And Uncut, The Straight Story, American Beauty, Superstar, Life, and Any Given Sunday.

I might have to check out the Life one. I really like that film. I remember being disappointed at age 19 that it wasn't the typical Martin and Eddie film, but when I watched it again recently, it was great.

I have an old friend who works in Hollywood as a writer. Not long after he got there in the mid-2000s, he saw Forrest Whitaker walking along the other side of the road and he yelled out, "Hey!" Forrest turned, smiled, and waved. My friend continued, "Hey, GHOST DOG!" Forrest put down his hand, frowned, and stomped away. I think about this story at least once a week.
