FYI

If you're a T-Mobile subscriber, they have a T-Mobile Tuesday special with a code for a $4 ticket on Atom Tickets. I went ahead and booked a seat for next Tuesday.

But, holy shit according Atom, the running time is 158 minutes. Damn.

I'm not sure where that runtime is coming from, but most places are reporting that the runtime is exactly 120 minutes.

Okay so Atom Tickets is wrong then. Good I guess. 158 minutes seems super bloated for this.

Not going but could the extended runtime indicate some sort of bonus content you get to see exclusively as part of the T-Mobile promotion?

Might see this when it hits home media, but I'm not interested enough to see it in theaters.

No and that wouldn't make any sense because it's not some special screening. Atom Tickets serves multiple theatre chains.

Not good!

I keep hearing about the gore - but the original comics are NOT all that gory, so why amp it up for the reboot? Ugh.

Owch, 11% on Rotten Tomatoes now:

"Marshall and screenwriter Andrew Cosby went overboard with their R-rating, introducing so much gore and profanity that it, quite frankly, gets dull. The flat performances and incoherent story do not help matters." - Washington Post

"It's two hours long but feels like an eternity, lurching incoherently from one noisy set-piece to another." - Time Out

"Hellboy might not be 'Uwe Boll bad,' but it's pretty damn close. A complete embarrassment." - The Beat

"A soulless, noisy mess of a movie that has far more in common with lesser Underworld or Resident Evil sequels than it does with the work of Guillermo del Toro or Mike Mignola." - Den Of Geek

"Somewhere out there right now Guillermo del Toro is crying to himself saying "sometimes dead is better". - Flickering Myth

del Toro isn't crying to himself at all. He's probably just saying "fucking idiots" and shaking his head.

Cause Neil Marshall is all about that and thinks that's what we want in Hellboy. Forget anything from the comics. Nice job Marshall, another bomb to add to your resume.

This will probably be the first Marshall film I will not like.

Dog Soldiers rocked. The Descent is a classic. Doomsday is a big time cult-classic, and I enjoyed Centurion, too.

I guess this Hellboy production was just a nightmare to be involved with.

Also to note, Marshall was involved with that chick that got Kevin Tsujihara fired from WB, who is in this movie.

Other than money, there was no need for a reboot anyway.

Aww, hell. Boy, that's disappointing.

Was planning on seeing this tonight, but might check out Ip Man Z instead.

Ha, going to see Ip Man Z Fri night but I actually did just finish watching Hellboy around an hour ago. A fan of the 2 Hellboy movies + Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers of course, but also love that crazy mash’em up Doomsday), but this movie just felt haphazard. It’s like a stitched together composition of origin stories, plotline vignettes and action/CGI set pieces.

Also,...So. Much. Exposition. For those who saw the movie, I think the movie turned for me when Lady Hatton started her speech. It could be because I caught a 10:35p showing after working late, but I think I blanked for a few seconds while she kept talking and that was when I felt the movie had issues. After that, the lore dumps by the characters stood out even more. It was also redundant when they had characters say/describe something...and then also show it as a flashback right after.

The motive of Milla Jovocich’s villain seemed to vacillate between two potential states which made the rationale for her actions seem erratic. She was less an obstacle for Hellboy to overcome and served more as a plot foil for Hellboy’s personal story.

i did like the cast quite a bit though - David Harbour, Sasha Lane, Ian McShane. Enjoyed the Giants action set piece. The Siberia ending sequence felt like the actual Hellboy movie that I wanted to see. Overall, felt like this was a missed opportunity.

Re: Hellboy (Marshall, 2019) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Well, I ended up seeing Hellboy after all...and I'm sure I'll be in the tiny minority on this, but I actually enjoyed it.

Yes, there's way too much exposition crammed into the first half and the movie's 3rd act is rather convoluted, but I found the plot to be pretty straightforward and fairly easy to follow, and not the "incoherent mess" that a lot of critics claimed it was.

The opening prologue wasn't very promising, but after an effective sequence involving Mexican wrestling, I kept waiting for the movie to run off the rails and it never did. The battle against the giant trolls was fun, if not particularly memorable, but the confrontation with Baba Yaga was fantastic (very Del Toro-esque if I may say so) and the high point of the movie for me. Enjoyed the Daimio flashback that played like a shoutout to Dog Soldiers, and the brief cameo by Thomas Haden Church as Lobster Johnson in 2 scenes.

Because of the crap trailers, I thought the movie would have a lot of dumb comedy shoehorned in, but story was played out pretty seriously, with most of the humor coming from the title character's wisecracks (which weren't all that bad). I actually found Harbour to be surprisingly excellent in the lead role. Maybe not as good as Perlman, but I thought he was both believable and sympathetic as the titular character. Now, Alice and Daimio are not as good supporting characters as Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, but neither one detracted from the movie and both added a bit of unique flavor to it. Milla was appropriately hammy and bewitching as the villainous Nimue, but the secondary villain, Gruagach, was your basic dumb brute henchman. He has a long battle sequence against Hellboy and Daimio in which he isn't really defeated, but Nimue just shows up as he's about to crush Hellboy and decides to zap him into nothing, which I found pretty ridiculous.

I never thought the gore was overly excessive. Sure, it's obviously way over-the-top, but the movie doesn't drown in it and some of the effects were rather creative. Seriously, I can't believe this movie is getting crapped on so much. It's certainly no classic and will be forgotten by the time Endgame hits theaters, but it's a well-paced two hour onslaught of action, gore and humor that is nowhere near as bad as its Rotten Tomatoes score would indicate.
