Re: Megalopolis (D: Francis Ford Coppola)

I guess the PW blurb had an outdated cast list.

Francis Ford Coppola has set his cast for his self-funded movie Megalopolis.

Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Voight will star in the project that is written and directed by The Godfather filmmaker. The logline for the film reads: “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius, and conflicted love.”

Coppola is independently producing the movie, which is budgeted at just under $100 million. Coppola talked to THR about self-funding the project at a 50th-anniversary event for The Godfather, saying, “There’s a certain way everyone thinks a film should be, and it rubs against the grain if you have another idea. People can be very unaccepting, but sometimes the other idea represents what’s coming in the future. That is worthy of being considered.”

Coppola is repped by Hirsch Wallerstein, which is handling sales on the movie.

Driver, repped by Sloane, Offer, was last seen in back-to-back Ridley Scott features, The Last Duel and House of Gucci. His upcoming project includes Noah Baumbach’s Netflix drama White Noise, an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s book of the same name, and Sony’s sci-fi thriller 65.

Emmanuel is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment, A&J Artists in the U.K. and Goodman Genow. The Game of Thrones and Fast & Furious star will next be seen in Screen Gems horror The Bride.

Fishburne, who worked with Coppola on Apocalypse Now, is repped by CAA, Landmark Artists and Del Shaw. Whitaker is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment.

Re: Megalopolis (D: Francis Ford Coppola)

Francis Ford Coppola continues to fill out the ensemble for his epic Megalopolis, with Talia Shire (The Godfather), Shia LaBeouf (Honey Boy), Jason Schwartzman (The French Dispatch), Grace Vanderwaal (Stargirl), Kathryn Hunter (The Tragedy of Macbeth) and James Remar (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) its newest cast additions.

The actors are set to star alongside the previously announced Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne and Aubrey Plaza. Details about the newest additions’ roles weren’t disclosed.

In Megalopolis, which is billed as a story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love, the fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems. Coppola will direct the independently produced film from his own script, at a budget just south of $100 million, with production set to kick off this fall.

I honestly thought Talia Shire was dead. Glad to see she is still kicking.

Re: Megalopolis (D: Francis Ford Coppola)

Francis Ford Coppola’s mega-epic “Megalopolis” is coming into view.

The writer/director confirmed that his wide-spanning film will be the first feature shot on the LED volume stage at newly opened Prysm Stages at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Coppola will be using virtual production through the NEP Virtual Studios company for the film.

Per an official statement, Coppola aims to have “one foot in the past and one in the future,” combining forms of classic filmmaking with the newest production technology. The Prysm Stage is built to accommodate a best-in-class ecosystem for physical production, including practical lighting, grip and camera, integrated into a state-of-the-art virtual production volume. Along with the new technology available to him at Trilith, Coppola plans to use new, never-before-seen techniques to create “Megalopolis.”

Writer/director Coppola is said to be spending tens of millions of his own dollars to fund the epic futuristic feature, over 20 years in the making. The film will be shot in Georgia starting in November 2022 and will continue through March 2023. The film stars Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, and Aubrey Plaza, as well as Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter, and James Remar.

The official “Megalopolis” synopsis mysteriously reads: “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love.”

Producer Michael Bederman said in a press statement, “Shooting in an LED volume opens up new ways to create our stories in film. What’s unique and exciting about shooting ‘Megalopolis’ at Prysm at Trilith is that we can marry traditional filmmaking experience, techniques and crew with the most advanced virtual production capabilities in the same space, accessing the best of both the physical and digital options available to filmmakers today.”

Coppola added, “I am enjoying working with Prysm at Trilith, as well as living in the unique Peachtree City.”

Prysm Stages president Barbara Ford Grant explained, “It is such an honor to be entrusted by Francis Ford Coppola and his team to bring ‘Megalopolis,’ regarded to be his magnum opus, to Prysm Stages. He is a legendary filmmaker, and his choice to shoot here is supported by our purpose-built facilities and best-in-class talent who are well versed in supporting the most demanding physical and virtual production needs.”

Prysm Stages offers a new virtual production experience for filmmakers with a modular stage designed with an open framework for production workflows and color pipelines that can be customized to any given project. Offering seasoned filmmakers, cinematographers, and showrunners a low barrier of entry, teams from physical production can come in and easily configure the setup to meet the creative needs of their projects. With a Georgia base, productions at Prysm at Trilith can benefit from the most generous film tax incentive in the United States, up to 30 percent with no annual cap on tax credits. The new facility is led by Prysm Stages Virtual Production Supervisor Jason Davis in partnership with Trilith Studios Director of Creative Technologies Barry Williams.

Re: Megalopolis (D: Francis Ford Coppola)

EXCLUSIVE: Francis Ford Coppola has completed the cast of Megalopolis, the epic drama that he’ll shoot this fall in Georgia.

Coppola has added SNL castmember Chloe Fineman, Licorice Pizza’s Isabelle Kusman, D.B. Sweeney, newcomer Bailey Ives and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.

They join Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker and Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel in the three leads. Also in the cast are Jon Voight; Coppola’s Apocalypse Now discovery Laurence Fishburne, The Godfather’s Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter and James Remar.

Coppola has ruminated over Megalopolis for over two decades. He is financing almost all of it himself. A maverick who has always bet on his vision — mostly to great success — he has put up the majority of the nearly $100 million. Logline: The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius and dangerous love.

In an interview earlier this year with Deadline about his Oscar memories, I asked Coppola if he’s staking himself yet again because he would not want to regret it on his death bed someday. He said that was only part of it.

Said Coppola: “What’s the worst that can happen to me? I’m going to die and be broke? I’m not going to be broke. My kids are all successful. They’re going to have this beautiful place…You’ve seen Inglenook. They’re going to have that. I’m confident that if you can make a film that people can keep getting something out of for 10, 20 or more years, you will not lose money. I look at my movies. They’re all being looked at 50 years later. The Outsiders, Dracula, they are still seen. My films, the more weird they are, the longer they seem to last. I don’t even know why.

“What would make me really happy? It’s not winning a lot of Oscars because I already have a lot and maybe more than I deserve. And it’s not that I make a lot of money, although I think over time it will make a lot of money because anything that the people keep looking at and finding new things, that makes money. So somewhere down the line, way after I’m gone, all I want is for them to discuss [Megalopolis] and, is the society we’re living in the only one available to us? How can we make it better? Education, mental health? What the movie really is proposing is that utopia is not a place. It’s how can we make everything better? Every year, come up with two, three or four ideas that make it better. I would be smiling in my grave if I thought something like that happened, because people talk about what movies really mean if you give them something. If you encouraged people to discuss marriage and education and health and justice and opportunities and freedom and all these wonderful things that human beings have conceived of. And ask the question, how can we make it even better? That would be great. Because I bet you they would make it better if they had that conversation.”
