The Movies (CNN Series) coming in July 2019 -- EP: Tom Hanks
This looks good. I always wondered why they never covered movies in the decade series and now we know why.
"The Movies” from exec producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog is a 12-hour series companion piece to CNN’s decade-long retrospective series that started in 2014 with “The Sixties” and continued through last year with “The 2000s.” None of those multi-part series spent much time on the movies of the era, in part because clip licensing is so expensive but producers always planned to follow-up with a movie-focused series. “Movies” will examine filmdom’s powerful role in shaping pop culture and influencing social norms. The first two-hour installment will cover the 1930s through the ’50s. Subsequent episodes will focus on the decades highlighted in CNN’s earlier series. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...a958f01708.jpg https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/cnn...es-1203164234/ |

The 80s installment of this is going to be a lot of fun.

The 70s is the best decade for movies, to me.

80's is my favorite decade but I hate to say it but the 90's probably had better movies.
The 70's beats all of them when comes to classic masterpieces. |

Speaking of film retrospectives, are we ever getting a new AFI list? They did it in 1998 and 2007, so I kind of assumed they would revisit that about every 10 years.

Did CBS lose the contract for those AFI shows?
The AFI salute where they honor a actor or actress usually airs every year in June. |

Will this be American film? Or the whole world? |

Typical. The three most important decades in the history of American cinema, the 1930s, '40s and '50s, get crammed into one episode, while garbage decades like the '80s and '90s each get a whole episode. :hairpull:

I hear you, but this is for the average nostalgic person with film interest, not a serious film history course. |

Is there an air date for this yet? I don't have CNN, so will have to make arrangements to watch at a friend's house

Re: The Movies (CNN Series) coming in July 2019 -- EP: Tom Hanks
I watched the United Shades of America for almost 2 month and so far they have not interrupted one show and hope that streak continues with the Movies series.
It is strange how they are not airing the shows arranged in order by the earliest date with the Golden Age first and then the the 60's unless they think that will turn off some viewers if they have to watch the old shit before they cover the movies in their era. |

Re: The Movies (CNN Series) coming in July 2019 -- EP: Tom Hanks
Phenomenal. They started with the classics of 80’s cinema (Raging Bull, Shining, Empire Strikes Back, etc.) and justifiably so. And they got the heavyweights to do some commentary. The people actually involved in the films. Lawrence Kasdan for Empire, Robert Redford for Ordinary People, even the elusive, long hair Bobby De Niro. Great stuff. A true movie buffs special with clips you’ve seen, but done in a different way. Truly nerdgasm.

Re: The Movies (CNN Series) coming in July 2019 -- EP: Tom Hanks
Agreed. It's really good. I expected some more horror, (Friday 13th, Nightmare on Elm street, the whole slasher genre), but overall a damn good selection of films.
