Frances McDormand Vanity Project (D: Her Husband)

EXCLUSIVE: When you have eight Oscars between you, it becomes less daunting to take on Shakespeare. Iím told that Denzel Washington is in early talks to team with Frances McDormand in a screen adaptation of Macbeth that will be directed by Joel Coen, from an adaptation he is writing. Scott Rudin is producing, and the plan is for A24 to distribute worldwide.

The Shakespeare classic was first turned into a film by Orson Welles in 1948 and numerous adaptations have followed. The storyline is that a Scottish lord becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he is destined to become king of Scotland. With the help of his ambitious wife, he does what he has to with the goal of seizing the crown. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starred in the last version, directed by Justin Kurzel.

Washington won his Oscars for Training Day and Glory, while McDormand won for Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Coen won his for No Country For Old Men and Fargo.

Washington is repped by WME, Coen and McDormand are at UTA.

Strange that he's not working with Ethan on this one.

Thats the main take away for me. They've made everything together for what.....37 years? Interesting.

That is strange. Is he sick?

Is this going to be a straightforward production or is it going to be somehow wonky?

It would seem weird for it to just be a straight adaptation given the history of the Coens, but who knows.

I'm really not interested in yet another Macbeth movie (especially considering it's only been a couple years since the last one), so I'm really hoping this will be an adaptation in the same way Oh Brother Where Art Thou was an adaptation of The Odyssey.

I agree, a straight adaptation seems too mundane for a Coen Bros. film. I'm curious if there's some kind of creative twist to all of this.

Maybe its just something for McDormand that she wants to do. I have liked every one of their movies quite a bit, even the "bad" ones.

I don't find this strange. If anyone remembers up until Intolerable Cruelty, Joel would always get sole credit for directing, Ethan would get credit for producing, and both would get credit for writing. Maybe it's just a vanity project for his wife.

Right, but even those earlier films were known as projects by both. Iím fairly certain this is the first time that a project that involves one of them hasnít been known as a Coen Bros. film. A little weird to me that after all this time of working together Ethan wouldnít have a credit of some sort. I mean clearly theyíre a good team and stuff like that. Unless maybe itís just not in that initial article and heíll be a producer or something.

I really love how many people assume McDormand is driving this film as a "vanity project"

I can see him a lot easier in a Coen Bros movie than a Woody Allen one.

An adaptation would be great...or at least modernize it in some way. Any of you who were lucky enough to see Patrick Stewart's version of Macbeth on stage (or the 2010 TV movie) which was set in the Cold War era (probably 1950s, although I don't think it was ever specified) knows what I mean.
