Another I need help identifying a movie!! Not Good Burger Edition!
 

First one of these ever. Need help as it has been driving me crazy for years!!! YEARS!!


I saw the movie at the Drive-In probably mid to late-1970’s. Hard to pinpoint because back then the Drive-In would pair older and new movies together. The first movie was the French Connection. Pretty sure it wasn’t when it came out because I would have been only 5 or 6. I recall being around 8-9 years old or older.



This was the second movie on the bill. The movie is like a car-crash/race type of movie. This guy with straggly blonde hair (like Kris Kristofferson in Convoy but not him) was talking to a policeman or trooper about a purple car; I think it was a Cuda or Charger type, but it could also have been an older style. I know it was a 2 door car. He told the police he would never steal it. Then a few scenes later he is seen driving in that same purple car he said he would not steal. He also had a large ball of something he was holding out the window to throw at the cars chasing him, I think. I remember a lots of dirt roads for some reason. Unfortunately, that is all I got and remember.

I know pretty vague I have searched as many Gone With 60 Seconds type movies, I can find from the 1970’s and none have that scene. I even went to the library to search our newspaper archives to see if I could find the ad for the movie in the paper. No luck. Not Convoy or Good Burger sadly… :sad:

^No large-ball-throwing in V.P. I'm pretty certain I haven't seen this, so it's pointless to take a guess. There are so many '70s flicks that fit the general theme.

Sorry for the slightly off topic, but do we have an actual official thread for helping to identify movies? I have a foreign movie I need help in identifying.

Hell if anyone has a list of the old Bravo channel or Showcase channel movies sponsored by Drambuie that ran during the 90's in Canada, I'd probably be able to dig it up.

I don't have a list of them, but did often watch them. Give it a shot.

Also, Chas Lawther is on Facebook, if it was during his era as host of the Showcase Revue, you could ask him. Although, he only seems to post in the All Night Show group.

I watched many of them as well. Back when Showcase was worth a damn. I haven't watched that channel since about the time OZ wrapped up. Now it's the home of Lifetime and Hallmark drivel.
The same goes for Bravo. It used to broadcast a fair bit of first-rate French-Canadian cinema, along with a few notable foreign films. Now? Nothing. I don't know if it even still exists.
Ha, I remember Lawther, now that you mention him! An odd sort of fellow. Something slightly lewd or naughty about his manner, and anyone who shortens his name from Charles to Chas is a bit suspect to begin with.

Run a plot past us, karoomba. I think one of us will get it.

Both channels were granted licenses based on their content (obviously), which was originally excellent. I guess, after a set term, they're allowed to change that. I'm in the same boat as you, when it comes to how long I watched them. They are pretty much useless, now. Basically broadcasting a few repeated series that you can find anywhere, and probably don't want to.

Chas was also Chuck, The Security Guard on The All Night Show. He was funny on that, and excellent on the Showcase Revue. He always had insightful comments on the films. Some of his successors weren't bad, but I didn't find them as interesting.

I still have two Showcase Revue caps that I won in trivia contests from Chas on the Revue. :)

Haven't heard of that. Just looked it up. It was before my time; at least, many years before I was watching late-night TV.
I was just razzing him. I liked him as well. The only other host I can think of was Linda something-or-other. Also an actress. She wasn't too bad. Neither came close to Elwy Yost on TVO, with regard to hosting gravitas and likability, though his taste was limited to old Hollywood movies.
You know, I just remembered that I occasionally tuned in to some porn documentary series on Showcase in the early 2000s. It revolved around some "director" who looked like that Bourdain guy, to my recollection, and his harem of angsty, bitchy "actresses".
Did you ever watch "On the Arts" on CBC Newsworld in the '90s? That was an interesting arts-review show. The host was David Gilmour, a quirky, jovial middle-aged dude who gained notoriety a few years ago for misogynistic comments about there being no female novelists worth reading.
Then there was "Reel to Real" on Rogers, which was kind of an inferior clone of Siskel & Ebert. I watched that for its entire run. There were so few movie-review shows, and now there's none.:(

Yeah, it makes sense that you would've been too young for the All Night Show. I was only about 15 when it was on. Great stuff. Apart from classic TV shows, they had a lot of short films from Ryerson, and other sources, as well as giveaways and other fun stuff. I was heartbroken when its cancellation was announced. Unfortunately, a lot of the taped segments were lost, as the tapes were reused for cost savings.

You're correct about the Revue. Linda Griffiths was another host, and I agree, she wasn't bad. I've just read that, sadly, she passed away in 2014. I think Valerie Buhagiar also hosted. The other one I remember was another male host, but I don't recall his name. Ah, Google to the rescue. Cameron Bailey was the other host.

I do remember Elwy Yost, but not the porn documentary, or Reel to Real. I vaguely remember On the Arts. This would be before your time, but I remember, as a kid, disliking Brian Linehan, whom my mother used to watch on City Lights. Shamefully, I think I used to dislike him because he was odd-looking. I later appreciated him, as he was an excellent interviewer, and always well prepared. He was actually parodied on SCTV as Brock Linehan, played by Martin Short. Pretty funny stuff.

Regarding ball caps, I'm pretty much with you. The only time I wear them is if I'm stuck out in the sun for an extended period of time, like an airshow. I only won the second one because my wife liked mine, and I didn't want to battle over it. :)

Sounds like an entertaining show that I, too, would have liked.
Sad to hear about Griffiths. Yes, you're absolutely right, I now remember Buhagiar and Bailey well. Bailey's a likable guy. As you undoubtedly know, he has been involved in the administration of TIFF for many years, and is now co-director after Handling retired.
I caught some later Linehan, and have seen Short's "Brock" imitation. I can understand being put off by his prissy, overly-formal appearance and style, but, man, if there was ever a better celebrity interviewer, I can't imagine whom it might be. He was the gold standard, and a frequent occurrence was celebrities being left speechless at the ultra-obscure facts or stories about them that he had dug up somewhere. It's a pity he's gone as well.
With my currently unruly hair, I should wear a hat of some kind (or get a damned haircut!), but I just don't like hats in general, especially ballcaps, which I find almost as declasse as tattoos-eek-. But I do like the story about you and your wife having matching caps. Do you sometimes still don them?

Poor d2cheer still doesn't have a title to his desert-car movie, but his thread has gone off on numerous interesting tangents.

So I have been going through that website looking at the cars but so far no luck...:(

On a positive note I have found some movies from the 70's I am going to check out!! A few starring John Saxxon look promising.

Well... There was an 'incident,' last summer. I don't recall exactly how it happened, but she attempted to adjust my hat, and broke the snap off the back of the strap. What I specifically remember is that I did NOT ask her to adjust it, so there was some irritation on my part when she broke it. :lol:

I actually mentioned it, today, as I'm wondering if a generic snap repair kit that I bought for a jacket will work. She said I could have her cap, which would be pretty sleazy of me to take, so I politely declined.

And just for clarity, each of our hats has our initial on the label so that we can tell them apart. It's easier, now, because mine's the broken one. ;)

I used to use ICMDb to identify movies in the "Guess That Screenshot" thread. Technically not cheating in my book, but now the secret's out!
Yeah, if it's of sentimental value, which understandably seems to be the case, I'm sure you can either fix it yourself or get it fixed by a haberdasher.;)
