I think it's better than Superbad. In fact, I don't even remember Superbad. I've seen it but have no memory of it.

You must have been very high indeed. The climactic scene between Jonah Hill and Emma Stone has way more heart than anything in this, and the story for the two films is almost identical. I liked Booksmart a lot, but it's inferior in every way to Superbad, which I would put up with Animal House and Fast Times at the very peak of raunchy teen comedies.

no, it doesn't. yes, the very ending was sweet for Superbad and there was a twinge of emotion, but no way in hell that had more heart than BS. SB was more slapstick comedy. this was a genuine friendship with ups and downs, great chemistry by leads, some uproariously funny moments and heart. and no way either is in class with classics like AH or Fast Times...

I recommend reading this long oral history of Superbad that ran in The Ringer a couple of years ago

I wanted to like this more than I did. It was alright and I liked the two leads, but it was pretty up and down for me. Funny in spots and I usually like coming of age movies like this but I just felt like it was off somehow.

The gang at what used to be What The Flick (now Breakfast All Day), gave it two 10's and a 9.9 (only issue was a song choice).

The gag with the stuffed panda was also hilarious.

Just saw this. Agree with "up and down". Some parts were laugh out loud or actually had good heart, and Billie Lourd was great. But there were a lot of uncomfortable or awkward moments. And kids curse a lot nowadays, at least in movies. The latter half was better than the first half, i think.
I do agree that the friendship between the leads was awesome and seemed real and natural.

Re: Booksmart (2019, D: Olivia Wilde) S: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein

I’ll spoilerize some of what I didn’t like since it’s not a review thread.

Spoiler:
Cursing doesn’t really bother me most of the time, but in this I thought it felt forced a lot of times. I also found it kind of awkward that the teacher not only brought the two girls to the house party, but then went in and slept with one of the students (despite how old he was). Especially with the current climate and the fact that sort of thing actually happens in real life (teachers sleeping with students that is) with negative results I’m surprised that a modern movie made light about something like that. Just felt weird.

I also thought it was a bit much to have a similar situation with the principal giving the girls a ride earlier as their Uber driver. Felt repetitive for a similar thing to happen twice in one film. Also to me the doll sequence went on a bit too long and wasn’t that funny. Plus it felt like a knockoff of when Harold and Kumar did the clay sequence in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.

The end bit with the two leads trying to get to graduation is too over the top as well. The one girl (Amy) just gets released from being in police custody and they’re ripping around carelessly and crash through the fence at school like it's no big deal. Just kind of dumb. Also a nitpick about the graduation, we see the students and the principal as well as the one teacher, but no other faculty or even parents seem present at the ceremony.

I overall like this less the more I think about it. While aspects of it are funny some of it is just dumb and awkward. I much preferred Edge of Seventeen for a recent coming of age type movie.

Good! You can make up for the people who stole it and didn't pay to see it.

In a sense I didn't pay to see it either, per se. I have a membership to my local cinema and can see unlimited movies. But they keep track of what I see, so it counts to some extent.

Yes, it counts. You weren't smoking weed and watching it at home.

Of course it counts, the same as when people see things with A-List. It counts towards the distributors $$$.

To be fair, we don't know if maybe he lives behind a drive-in theater, or is maybe a member of the Academy who receives screener Blu Rays.

Comedy of the year but that's not saying much. Really loved the two leads, their chemistry, and how positive they (and really all of the characters) are but didn't laugh a lot. 7.5/10

Sweet film. Some laugh out loud moments here and there, but I smiled watching it the whole time. The two leads had tremendous chemistry. You truly believed they were life long best friends. And I'll admit I teared up at the end. Thumbs way up here.

Really good movie. Yeah, the chemistry between the leads is off the chart. I saw where they lived together for a couple months when filming started. While it was played in one of the smaller screens, there was a small crowd there. I'll definitely get this on blu when it comes out.

Re: Booksmart (2019, D: Olivia Wilde) S: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein

We have little kids and a tight budget so we don't always go the babysitter route. Instead, we do AMC A-List and one goes to see a movie, then the other, and that was the case tonight. My wife caught it at an early show and loved it, then came home and I saw the late show and also loved it, lots of fun.

When I came home she asked how I liked it and I deadpanned, "I liked it a lot but first thing first: your old teddy bear... I mean... because our kids play with that, so...' She cracked up pretty good at that one.

Wilde has solid timing. That's what makes or breaks these flicks. Otherwise dug it, was like a hybrid Sorry to Bother You and Superbad.
