Which movie Kick Started/Turbo Charged the Most Careers ?

Which movie do you think is responsible for kick starting or turbo charging the most careers ?

For me, two movies come to mind

Pulp Fiction - everyone associated with that movie got a huge turbo charge in their career with Travolta getting a total resurrection and Samuel Jackson getting his career set up for decades

and

American Pie - almost all of the cast was unknown and most had somewhat decent and consistent careers after American Pie

Dazed and Confused had a pretty impressive list of young stars:

Matthew McConaughey
Ben Affleck
Parker Posey
Joey Lauren Adams
Rene Zelweger
Milla Jovovich

The Outsiders is the first movie to come to mind.

The Outsiders is a good candidate imo. You got Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, and even a very young Sophia Coppola.

Edit: Golden beat me to it.

I would argue against movies like the Outsiders. The actual movie the Outsides did not kickstart their careers, It was Karate kid for Macchio, Top Gun for Cruise, Dirty Dancing for Swayze etc etc

The Outsiders is a movie which has a lot of stars before they hit it big in an ensemble cast, but the movie alone did not kickstart their careers

I guess we have a very different definition of kickstarting, which I don’t think is the same as star-making. Macchio was cast in The Karate Kid BECAUSE of The Outsiders. The actor has said so himself. Swayze was cast in Red Dawn the next year. Cruise turned into a star after Risky Business. I could keep going. Point is, the movie most certainly paved the way for their careers.

Yeah, the Outsiders is where I became aware of most of those folks.

I think what Desmond is talking about though is what movie jump started the most careers, not what movies had a bunch of unknown actors in it who eventually became big.

Re: Which movie Kick Started/Turbo Charged the Most Careers ?

The Outsiders and Dazed and Confused are sort of the gold standard here, both essentially launching the careers of their respective decade’s “generation” of actors, the brat packers and the indie generation of the 90s.

Others...

The Last Picture Show — Cybil Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms, Randy Quaid, Jeff Bridges, Eileen Brennan, Ellen Burstyn

American Graffiti — Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, Richard Drefuss, Suzanne Sommers, Cindy Williams

Fast Times at Ridgemont High — Sean Penn, Eric Stoltz, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker

Mean Girls — Lilo, Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams, Lizzie Caplan, and put Tina Fey on the a-list

Black Hawk Down —Orlando Bloom, Ty Burrell, Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Hugh Dancy, Tom Hardy, Ioan Gruffudd

Do the Right Thing — Spike Lee, SLJ, Martin Lawrence, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, John Turturro

Platoon — Willem Dafoe, Tom Betenger, Kevin Dillon, Johnny Depp, Corey Glover (singer from Living Color), John McGinley, Keith David, and was Charlie Sheen’s first big starring role.

Footloose — Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Chris Penn, John Lithgow (though had already had memorable roles in Twilight Zone and The World According to Garp), Sarah Jessica Parker, and Diane Weist.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1960) - Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Horst Buchholz. And one could argue that Eli Wallach was cast in THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY based on his portrayal in this movie.

And to add to the defense of THE OUTSIDERS, it was certainly their roles in that movie that led to the star-making roles of Cruise, Macchio, Swayze, et al. So, yes, THE OUTSIDERS certainly jump-started their careers. They wouldn't have gotten their star-making roles without it.

Well like I said, those unknown actors became pretty well known shortly after The Outsiders was released. As far as one single movie that turned a bunch of actors and actresses into big, overnight sensations, I honestly don’t think that movie truly exists.

This example probably proved my last point wrong.

A Time To Kill did INFINITELY more to catalyze Matthew McConaughey's career (I don't wanna look up the spelling) than Dazed and Confused. After D&C he was still an unknown until his starmaking turn in that absolute shithouse of a movie in 1996.

While she had been in movies long before, Basic Instinct turned Sharon Stone from a nobody to a name actress.

That was the first example that came to mind. It turned her from a no-name actress to an A-list star overnight.

You’re not missing much. McConaughey’s performance was both star making and cringe worthy.

Samuel L. Jackson’s role is enough to warrant a viewing.

It's interesting to mention Garp. While it doesn't have the quantity, I think it has some serious "turbo-charge" quality. It was the first dramatic role for Williams, and it really put both Close and Lithgow on the map...where they still reside.

40 Year Old Virgin - All the Apatow cast made it to the spotlight. There was Freaks and Geeks. But that show was for us nerds.

In terms of movies not mentioned yet, I'll go with Carrie. It kick started Travolta, Irving, Nancy Allen, Katt (he still works!), and PJ Soles, and it turbo charged Spacek.
