A former colleague of mine is going to be absolutely livid that it won. She hated the movie and thought it was a too sanitized white washed version of this story.

No, he is not. He is known to Joe Dante fans, and that's it.

People do not know who he is. If you showed people his picture and told them he was an actor, they might say he was familiar. There are a few parts he would be recognized for (all from 35-40 years ago) but you would have to jog people's memories about Fame or show them a clip from Gremlins. He had a long career as a character player in film and TV, so good for him, but he never achieved any fame or notoriety as an actor.
