One Cut of the Dead (2017 Japanese zombie movie you need to see)

Re: One Cut of the Dead (2017 Japanese zombie movie you need to see)
There aren’t many films that make over 1000 times their initial budget but Japan’s One Cut of the Dead did. Made for just ¥3 million ($25,000), it became a word-of-mouth smash making $30.5 million worldwide. The cult hit has been winning awards and accolades on the festival circuit since its release in 2017 but has been hard to see if you live in the US… that is until now. Shudder is once again bringing another horror gem to screens; the film hits the streaming service this Autumn, but first Shudder will be releasing the film in its US theatrical debut. We’re big fans of the flick and are excited to exclusively debut the trailer here!
The hyper-meta film centers on the crew of a low budget zombie movie who are trying to shoot their magnum opus when a real zombie apocalypse begins and the director Higurashi (Takayuki Hamatsu) can’t believe his luck. Gonzo filmmaking at its finest! One Cut of the Dead relishes in its own limitations and is completely inventive, utterly addictive, and very very silly. The film originally had a very (very, very) limited run but garnered massive praise and a huge amount of traction. It became the seventh biggest domestic film of the year in Japan and a genre hit in horror circles. Currently sitting pretty with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, One Cut of the Dead is hitting Shudder just in time for the most perfect spooky movie season: Fall.
It’s incredibly exciting to know that this fan fave horror will hit the mainstream in just a couple of weeks and we can’t wait to see the rest of the world fall in love with the little zombie movie that could. You can check out Once Cut of the Dead in theaters in New York and LA on September 13th, and at a special one-night event at cinemas all across the country on September 17th and you can grab your tickets here. Don’t miss your chance to be part of horror history!!

I'm not sure it's specified above, but it'll be on Shudder on September 27th.
That said, if it's playing in a cinema near you on the 17th, go! It's a total blast to watch with a full audience.

Shudder will see a slight spike in new accounts on September 27th. If they were smart, they'd make sure they have a good lineup of other movies to keep some newbies around. It will be the first time checking it out for me.

Yep.
Edit: apparently, I ordered the single disc. Not sure how many bonus features it drops but still a great price.

I didn't even realize there was a 2-disc edition. Looks like the standard Blu includes only a trailer, while the Blu in the combo pack contains a LOT more . . .
- Interview with director Shinichiro Ueda (17min)
- Making Of (45min)
- Take 8 short film (20min)
- Outtakes (5min)
- Go-Pro version of one-cut (38min)
- POM TV Instruction Video (1 min)
- Trailer (1 min)
- Slipcase

^ Yeah, the supplements are all fairly good. I'm happy I have the 2-disc version, though I can't recall which extras were on the 1st or 2nd disc. I can check later.

Are both discs region-free? I've had a case where the movie was region-free but the supplemental discs weren't. I had to watch those via VLC on my computer.

The listing suggests the 2-disc set is a Blu-ray/DVD combo. Is that not the case?

I canceled my order and found a copy of the LE on eBay. I really want to see all of the bonus stuff, too, and I highly doubt any eventual USA release will be as loaded.

Popped both discs in this evening.
Both are Blu-ray discs.
Disc one has the movie and the trailer.
Disc two has all the remaining features.
Both are region free.
So it looks like the single disc release is just the first disc repackaged. That's a shame. I still think it's worth owning, even without the extras, despite how good they are.

Saw this in a theatre in Vancouver tonight. Probably wouldn't have seeked it out if not for this thread. What a fantastic film. It is at the same time the best zombie movie and best comedy in YEARS. I'm gonna order the blu ray tonight. I can sometimes be somewhat hyperbolic right after seeing a film I really love, but this might even be better than Shaun of the Dead. It's right up there for me.
The cynical indie remake already exists and is called The Dead Don't Die. Not really, but seeing this film tonight made me dislike that film even more.
The twist in this film reminded me of
Anyhow, like everyone else in this thread. I highly recommend this film.

I've often compared it to Noises Off (the play, never saw the film adaptation), and a recent review I saw made the same connection.

Haven’t read the thread but let me take a wild guess. First it’s a zombie movie. Then it’s revealed to be a behind the scenes movie about making a zombie movie. Then zombies attack the film crew. Then there’s another layer.

Maybe. Maybe not. But so what?
There's more to it than just its construction. Way more.
