Bruno Ganz dead at 77

Swiss actor Bruno Ganz died overnight on Saturday in his home in Zurich, according to German media. He was 77 years old.

Ganz was famous both on the stage and on the big screen in roles including that of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in "Downfall" (2004) and Fernando Girasole in "Bread and Tulips" (2000).

His last film performance was as Verge in Lars von Trier's horror movie "The House That Jack Built" (2018), playing a character that alludes to the figure of Virgil in Dante's "Inferno."

In 1996, he received the prestigious award for German-speaking actors, the Iffland-Ring, which the bearer traditionally disposes of until death and passes on by will to the male actor he considers the best in German-language theater.
His portrayal of Hitler was iconic. I will never forget him going on a tirade about a Volkswagen.

Man, RIP. 77 ain't as old as it used to be. He was terrific in The House That Jack Built.

He was in some great movies.

The Marquise of O
The American Friend
The Boys From Brazil
Nosferatu the Vampyre
In The White City
Wings of Desire
Eternity and a Day
Bread and Tulips
Downfall
The Baader Meinhoff Complex
The Reader
The Counselor
The House That Jack Built

And it looks like his last film will be Terrence Malick's Radegund.

Weirdly yeah, I see 77 nowadays and think that's still not that old. But hell, pneumonia in your mid-60s on can easily be fatal.

I know him mostly from Downfall, which must absolutely suck for a German actor - to be remembered primarily for being Hitler.

(And of course the following, never ending memes)

He was good in that role though.

There have been many excellent performances of Hitler by actors over the decades.
But there has been only one that has become immortal.
RIP.

I remember him most from his collaborations with Wim Wenders. Especially Wings of Desire.

Swiss And he was primarily remembered for playing an angel, which was probably pretty cool.

Saw Wings of desire on the big screen last year and Ganz is so great in it. R.I.P.

His best performance was probably in Reinhard Hauff's Messer im Kopf.

He was also good as Jonathan Harker in Herzog's Nosferatu.

First remember seeing him in The American Friend - and later in Nosferatu, Boys from Brazil and Downfall. Always delivered a stand-out performance. RIP :(
