It popped up on recommendations of YouTube this morning. Looked interesting but not sure if Octavia is believable for me.

Everybody’s welcome at Ma’s. But good luck getting home safe.
Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer stars as Sue Ann, a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town (Diana Silvers, Glass), to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own.
She offers the kids the chance to avoid drinking and driving by hanging out in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober. Don’t curse. Never go upstairs. And call her “Ma.”
But as Ma’s hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma’s place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on earth.
Ma also stars Juliette Lewis (August: Osage County) as Maggie’s mom, Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) as a local dad, Missi Pyle (Gone Girl) as his girlfriend, and McKaley Miller (TV’s Hart of Dixie), Corey Fogelmanis (TV’s Girl Meets World), Gianni Paolo (TV’s Power) and Dante Brown (Lethal Weapon TV series) as Maggie’s friends.
From Tate Taylor, the acclaimed director of The Help and Get On Up, and blockbuster producer Jason Blum (Get Out, Halloween, The Purge series) comes a thriller anchored by a daring and unexpected performance from Spencer, one of the most powerful actors of her generation.
Ma is written by Scotty Landes (Comedy Central’s Workaholics) and Taylor, is produced by Blum for his Blumhouse Productions, by Taylor, and by John Norris (executive producer, Get On Up), and is executive produced by Spencer, Couper Samuelson, Jeanette Volturno, and Robin Fisichella.

Saw this Trailer earlier this evening before a screening of Us.
Not sure how I feel about it yet but it's great to see Octavia Spencer get a chance to vary up her roles.

Saw the trailer for this in front of Us. Looks so goofy, but yet it might actually be entertaining in a so bad it’s good way.

A friend saw this last night and says it may be even more fucked up than Brightburn. I'll be seeing it on Sunday.

This looks like a good cheesefest. Probably won’t see it in theaters but might catch it eventually when it hits home media.

Saw this earlier tonight.
While the film gets points for having Octavia Spencer in a Genre Film, it's an absolute mess.
On one hand, it's absolutely ridiculous (at times working in it's favor in terms of entertainment), on the other it's devoid of any sort of logic. Both feed each other here.
There's also quite a bit of Social Commentary that gets brought up but rarely goes anywhere significant.

Ma was meh.
I missed it in theaters but redboxed it this week on BD. There's a couple of good kills, but it's a bit of a mess. I saw my comment above there about a friend saying it was more fucked up than Brightburn. I disagree. Brightburn is actually good. Ma is mediocre.
If you must see it, rent it, or wait until it's on Netflix.

Re: Ma (2019, D: Tate Taylor) S: Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, Luke Evans
Ma was entertaining enough, mainly because of Octavia Spencer, but filled to the brim with absolutely stupid characters continuing to do stupid things despite the oodles of red flags. Being naive teenagers isn't a good enough excuse. True, they didn't deserve what they got, but they sure as shit deserved some kind of an extreme reality check.
