The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

Judd Apatow has set his next feature film, an untitled comedy that will star Saturday Night Live castmember Pete Davidson. It will reflect a storyline that mirrors the comic’s own life, including his firefighter father on 9/11. It’s Apatow’s first film since Trainwreck, a vehicle crafted for Amy Schumer.

Davidson has a lot of potential, and even more baggage. A whirlwind romance with Ariana Grande led to a high profile engagement and an equally high profile breakup. Davidson separately drew the ire of conservatives when he poked fun at the eyepatch of former SEAL turned Republican congressman Dan Crenshaw, who lost his eye in an explosion in Afghanistan. Davidson subsequently sent out a tweet that indicated he might be considering harming himself.

All in all it has been a rocky year for a talented young man, whose appearances on Weekend Update have largely been standout good. Being able to turn his energy into a comedy by Apatow, who helped make stars of Steve Carell, Schumer and many others, will be an important next step for Davidson, who wrote the script with Apatow and Dave Sirus.

Davidson appears in Big Time Adolescence, which premiered yesterday at Sundance.

Apatow and Barry Mendel will produce. Universal Executive Vice President of Production Erik Baiers will oversee production on behalf of the studio. Davidson is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and ICM, Apatow is repped by Mosaic and UTA.

I wonder if Davidson can carry a 147-minute comedy?

He can’t do 2 minutes on SNL, so I’m guessing no.

I'm guessing that the most expensive thing in the budget will be the insurance.

This. He mus resonate with young millenials or Gen Z... because I don't find him remotely funny. Adam Sandler circa 2012 is funnier.

I can just about see the release title for this being "untitled Pete Davidson movie." Can't imagine how big a bomb this will be...

Woh, woh, woh, stop. You mean to tell me he’s going to actually do something finally? I’ll believe it when I see it.

It pays to be on SNL and you might not be the funniest person but you can get roles in films just by being on the show.

Nah, just a silly joke. Though I doubt he has a micropenis.

its really sad that the most memorable Pete Davidson character is him playing a half wit that says "OK" when he should be reacting. its almost as if he did that accidentally in the reading room during rehearsal as he actually didn't understand something and it turned into a bit. I am aghast that Kate is dating this turd.

re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

Marisa Tomei, the Oscar winner who plays Aunt May in the current Spider-Man movies, will star opposite Pete Davidson in Universal’s untitled comedy being made by Judd Apatow.

Apatow will direct the feature, which is set to shoot this summer in New York City, and he also is producing with Barry Mendel, his collaborator on such comedies as Bridesmaids, This Is 40 and The Big Sick.

Universal’s senior executive vp production Erik Baiers will oversee for the studio.

Details on the logline are being kept under lock and key, but it is known to be a coming-of-age comedy set in Staten Island and will use elements from the life of Davidson, the stand-up comedian who became a breakout on NBC's Saturday Night Live. The script was written by Apatow, Davidson and Dave Sirus.

Tomei will play Davidson's mother.

Bel Powley and Bill Burr are already on the call sheet for undisclosed roles.

The comedy is scheduled for a June 19, 2020, release.

Tomei, a three-time Oscar nominee, stars with Isabelle Huppert in Frankie, a drama set to be unveiled at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The actress will follow her trip to the Croisette by reprising her role of Peter Parker’s favorite (and only) aunt, May Parker, in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is slated to open July 5.

Tomei is repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Paul Hastings LLP.

Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

Over his storied career, Judd Apatow has elevated a series of promising young comedy talents to their first major big-screen performance, including Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Amy Schumer and Kumail Nanjiani.

This summer, Apatow directs Saturday Night Live breakout Pete Davidson in a bracing comedy about love, loss and laughter on Staten Island.

Scott (Davidson) has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister (Maude Apatow, HBO’s Euphoria) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother (Oscar® winner Marisa Tomei) and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys—Oscar (Ricky Velez, Master of None), Igor (Moises Arias, Five Feet Apart) and Richie (Lou Wilson, TV’s The Guest Book)—and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show).

But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr, Netflix’s F Is for Family), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.

The film also stars Steve Buscemi as Papa, a veteran firefighter who takes Scott under his wing, and Pamela Adlon (FX’s Better Things) as Ray’s ex-wife, Gina.

The King of Staten Island is directed by Apatow (Trainwreck, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) from a script by Apatow, Davidson and former SNL writer Dave Sirus. It is produced by Apatow for his Apatow Productions alongside Barry Mendel. Together, the duo shared producing credits on the Academy Award®-nominated films The Big Sick and Bridesmaids, as well as This Is 40, Trainwreck and Funny People. The film’s executive producers are Pete Davidson, Michael Bederman and Judah Miller.
