Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

It seems like it will be worth watching but there are enough movies I can watch and wait until Sept-Nov or something in that range when it comes out on home video and maybe watch it before a new SNL episode in the Fall.

Surprised Apatow would be so honest in that Twitter feed but he is loaded with cash so he won't be struggling.

Usually comedies are shorter in length because the creative involved realize that if they cannot sustain the funny, then asking people to watch their movie for over two hour is grueling.

Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

I rented it tonight and watched with the wife and daughter. Thought it was pretty good. Well made, pretty funny. I was a little worried since his recent Netflix special was a total train wreck. But this was pleasant and satisfying. It’s more than I needed to spend for a rental, but it was cheaper than three movie tickets and easy enough to watch at home.
Didn’t really think it dragged though it did feel longish. Tomei was great in it and I liked the love interest as well. Glad I watched it. Glad I could help support the industry a bit.

BTW there’s a pretty big discrepancy between what Bill Burr’s character tells Pete (in the above ground pool scene) and what he had previously told his mom about his dad. It is so big and consequential that you would feel pretty certain it would be addressed later, but it never was. Kinda weird, but it must be a deleted scene.

Watched it last weekend with the Wife, paid the $20 no problem. Worth the time and effort under the circumstances. Recommended.

The King of Staten Island...this was decent. a little long. the only one who didn't seem to be acting was Davidson. seemed the most real and genuine, since probably bc, he's not a real actor. but, he did a very good job. this is definitely not a comedy. much more serious drama. coming of age story too. not bad, not among Apatow's best. Funny People still holds that for me. TKoSI is probably the most sentimental and knowing it is based on Davidson's real life made it more poignant. but, that last scene in particular when the Kid Cudi's song Pursuit of Happiness which i loved already, but at that time, that moment, that last look. it really worked.

solid:

Also totally disagree with his statement that it's "definitely not a comedy" but rather a drama . It is most certainly a comedy and a funny one at that. It has some dramatic scenes but keeps a light comedic edge all the way through.
What a weird take.

it definitely does not take a comedy angle at all. this is way more dramatic, way more sentimental than anything Apatow has done. there are some funny lines of dialogue, but that's it. it is really about a hurting kid trying to fix himself and this most certainly is no where near in the comedy category.

I would say it’s an endearing coming of age drama with light comedic elements...

Has anyone seen Staten Island Summer?

I thought maybe Colin Jost would be pissed since he wrote that movie and they come up with another movie with Staten Island in the title.

Credit where credit's due : While I still think it's an out and out comedy, this very good movie podcast completely agrees with you that this is Apatow's first drama instead of comedy. They have your back on this one. It's a good listen with a nice summary of Apatow's career.

Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

I’ll listen eventually and thank you for acknowledging my superiority doc , but it really is so self evident. It’s a drama with some light comedic elements that happen in real life scenarios. I think if I went in with that expectation that it’s a drama, I would have liked it even more. Maybe on another viewing will prove that. But, like you was expecting more comedy which you saw more of. And that’s fine. I saw it more as a defense mechanism for Scott in dealing with his growing up and finding a true path in life and getting out of his usually smoke up and chill in moms house till whenever mentality. If you look at with the perspective that Scott needed some kinda help, psychologically or whatever. I know he said he was on meds so that all plays into it. That is drama and real life. Not fantasy and comedy.

“The King of Staten Island" is the top of the charts.

With most movie theaters across the country closed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, “box office” success is being gauged by Most Streamed and Bestseller Lists on Fandango, iTunes, Netflix and Hulu.

On Amazon Prime Video and iTunes’ rental charts, “The King of Staten Island” was the most watched movie of the weekend. It also reportedly was No. 1 on Comcast Xfinity, Apple TV, VUDU, Google Play, YouTube, DirecTV and FandangoNOW. (It was not released on Netflix and Hulu.)

Amazon customers gave “The King of Staten Island” a 4.6 out of 5 while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 71% score. Critics also gave it overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Watched about half and shut it off. Maybe I'll finish it today, or maybe not. I guess Judd Apatow is just not my cup of tea.

Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Still don't think Davidson can act well at all but the story and other actors kept it moving. I was actually surprised when it ended; I didn't think I had already watched 2 hours. IMO worth the $20 rental.

Also, realizing the the actress who played his GF has a deep British accent was crazy. Going from that extreme to a full blown Jersey girl accent is very impressive.

I'd give it 3.5/5

Re: The King of Staten Island (2020, D: Judd Apatow) - S: Pete Davidson

I enjoyed it. It is long but it doesn't feel like it drags at any point and I do like that Apatow took his time to tell the story.

This is similar to Big Time Adolescence where if you aren't a fan of Pete Davidson, you're going to hate it. For better or worse, this is his movie. I enjoy his humor so this worked for me.

Bill Burr is also great in it and if anyone steals the show, it's him. The fight scene where he tries to explain why he bets on the Jets had me cracking up.

Okay that's fair. I liked it better than you, but I can see that angle. If you don't click with Pete Davidson I can see it being a slog.
That said Marissa Tomei and Bill Burr were great. Wish there was more time spent with them and more with Steve Bushemi (who was once a real life fireman).

I agree with this.

As someone who’s originally from NYC (I currently live in New Jersey), I do have to have to say that some of the characters were spot on. My tattoo artist lives in Staten Island so every time I go hang out at her shop or go get tattooed I see people like the ones in this movie all the time.

This was not bad and probably one of the rare 2020 movies I bought on Blu-ray this year.
